Association of posterior urethral valve with neonatal intestinal obstruction is rare; rarer still is its association with meconium ileus. A 1-day-old male presented with features of neonatal intestinal obstruction. Gastrografin enemas confirmed microcolon and were therapeutic. Later, the neonate developed overflow incontinence and deranged renal functions; micturating cystourethrogram confirmed posterior urethral valve. Cystoscopic valve fulguration was performed after stabilization; outcome was favourable.

CONTEXT: Posterior urethral valve (PUV) is a widely known condition affecting males that generally presents prenatally or at birth. PUVs have also been occasionally described in literature in cases diagnosed during adolescence or adulthood. CASE REPORT: This report presents two late PUV cases, one in a teenager and the other in an adult. Both cases had had clinical signs of urinary tract infection and obstructive urinary symptoms. The diagnoses were made by means of voiding cystourethrography and urethrocystoscopy. Endoscopic valve fulguration was the treatment chosen for both. Their follow-up was uneventful.

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a rare and serious disorder of the gastrointestinal tract motility with the primary defect of impaired peristalsis. Symptoms are consistent with a bowel obstruction, although mechanical obstruction cannot be identified. It is a rare differential diagnosis for neonatal intestinal obstruction. Herein we report a case of neonate with non-resolving intestinal pseudo-obstruction, presenting since birth as progressive abdominal distention. The diagnosis was made by exclusion of mechanical causes of intestinal obstruction via thorough imaging studies.
