The problematic relationship of literature to ideology is discussed, especially in light of the Marxist criticism of Terry Eagleton as against the pragmatist thinking to which many intellectuals were increasingly drawn. The new developments in politics are explored in creative writing by Lionel Trilling, Mary McCarthy, Edmund Wilson, and James T. Farrell.
