Penyebab kemajuan dunia kedokteran saat ini adalah karena penelitian. Penerapan hasil penelitian para ilmuwan telah membawa perubahan pengobatan penyakit kardiovaskuler. Dampak tersebut dapat dilihat dari pertambahan usai harapan hidup rata-rata 8 tahun dan kualitas hidup yang meningkat pada pasien penyakit jantung di dunia. Hal ini terjadi karena kemajuan penelitian eksperimental, teknologi dan penelitian klinis. Transplantasi jantung telah meningkatkan harapan hidup seseorang. Namun, keterbatasan dalam ketersediaan organ jantung dan reaksi penolakan yang menghendaki konsumsi obat anti rejeksi seumur hidup, menyebabkan pada ilmuwan berupaya mencari solusi yang lebih baik. Penggunaan transplantasi organ dan implantasi jaringan mempunyai keterbatasan daya tahan hidup, paling lama 15 tahun ! Kekurangan implant sintetik dalam menggantikan kerusakan jaringan adalah ketidakmampuan beradaptasi terhadap lingkungan mikro jaringan lokal. Karena itu, perlu dihasilkan materi bagi implantasi jaringan yang bersifat lebih biologis - sebagai terapi. Dalam hal ini, jawaban ditujukan pada penggunaan sel punca baik dari sumsum tulang maupun jantung (cardiac stem cell) dan induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC).
