Abstract Moduli spaces of bounded local G-shtukas are a group-theoretic generalisation of the function field analogue of Rapoport and Zink’s moduli spaces of p-divisible groups. In this article we generalise some very prominent concepts in the theory of Rapoport-Zink spaces to our setting. More precisely, we define period spaces, as well as the period map from a moduli space of bounded local G-shtukas to the corresponding period space, and we determine the image of the period map. Furthermore, we define a tower of coverings of the generic fibre of the moduli space, which is equipped with a Hecke action and an action of a suitable automorphism group. Finally, we consider the $\ell $ -adic cohomology of these towers.

AbstractLet $$X/\mathbb {F}_{q}$$ X / F q be a smooth, geometrically connected variety. For X projective, we prove a Lefschetz-style theorem for abelian schemes of $$\text {GL}_2$$ GL 2 -type on X, modeled after a theorem of Simpson. Inspired by work of Corlette-Simpson over $$\mathbb {C}$$ C , we formulate a conjecture that absolutely irreducible rank 2 local systems with infinite monodromy on X come from families of abelian varieties. We have the following application of our main result. If one assumes a strong form of Deligne’s (p-adic) companions conjecture from Weil II, then our conjecture for projective varieties reduces to the conjecture for projective curves. We also answer affirmitavely a question of Grothendieck on extending abelian schemes via their p-divisible groups.

Abstract Inspired by the papers [2, 10] we will study, on 2-divisible groups that need not be abelian, the alienation problem between Drygas’ and the exponential Cauchy functional equations, which is expressed by the equation f ( x + y ) + g ( x + y ) g ( x - y ) = f ( x ) f ( y ) + 2 g ( x ) + g ( y ) + g ( - y ) . f\left( {x + y} \right) + g\left( {x + y} \right)g\left( {x - y} \right) = f\left( x \right)f\left( y \right) + 2g\left( x \right) + g\left( y \right) + g\left( { - y} \right). We also consider an analogous problem for Drygas’ and the additive Cauchy functional equations as well as for Drygas’ and the logarithmic Cauchy functional equations. Interesting consequences of these results are presented.

Abstract We investigate qualitative properties of the underlying scheme of Rapoport–Zink formal moduli spaces of p-divisible groups (resp., shtukas). We single out those cases where the dimension of this underlying scheme is zero (resp., those where the dimension is the maximal possible). The model case for the first alternative is the Lubin–Tate moduli space, and the model case for the second alternative is the Drinfeld moduli space. We exhibit a complete list in both cases.

Rapoport–Zink spaces are deformation spaces for $p$-divisible groups with additional structure. At infinite level, they become preperfectoid spaces. Let ${{\mathscr M}}_{\infty }$ be an infinite-level Rapoport–Zink space of EL type, and let ${{\mathscr M}}_{\infty }^{\circ }$ be one connected component of its geometric fiber. We show that ${{\mathscr M}}_{\infty }^{\circ }$ contains a dense open subset which is cohomologically smooth in the sense of Scholze. This is the locus of $p$-divisible groups which do not have any extra endomorphisms. As a corollary, we find that the cohomologically smooth locus in the infinite-level modular curve $X(p^{\infty })^{\circ }$ is exactly the locus of elliptic curves $E$ with supersingular reduction, such that the formal group of $E$ has no extra endomorphisms.

This chapter analyzes shtukas with one leg over a geometric point in detail, and discusses the relation to (integral) p-adic Hodge theory. It focuses on the connection between shtukas with one leg and p-divisible groups, and recovers a result of Fargues which states that p-divisible groups are equivalent to one-legged shtukas of a certain kind. In fact this is a special case of a much more general connection between shtukas with one leg and proper smooth (formal) schemes. Throughout, the goal is to fix an algebraically closed nonarchimedean field. The chapter then provides an overview of shtukas with one leg and p-divisible groups.
