Taking the Check or Checking the Take

This essay studies the endowments of modern American colleges and universities. It examines the norms that govern the activities that affect the size of the endowment, specifically spending, acceptance of donations, and investment of endowment funds. The norms regulating the latter two are found to be insufficient, as is evidenced by their inconsistent application. However, American catholic colleges and universities apply the norms regulating investments more consistently than other schools. Catholic colleges' and universities' Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) practices are found to be rooted in the catholic church's official teaching on catholic universities as found in ex corde ecclesiae and the catechism of the catholic church. These documents suggest the need to develop, codify and apply even more rigorous norms governing the acceptance of donations and investment of endowment funds at every American catholic college and university.

Theology in the Catholic University

Major secular universities do not teach theology; they teach religious studies, if they teach anything about religion at all. It is impossible to imagine a Catholic university without theology. Four characteristics of Catholic theology show the unique contribution the discipline makes to Catholic higher education. False dichotomies are identified: critical or catechetical and faith or reason. This chapter describes the dramatic changes over the past sixty years in who teaches theology and what is taught to lay students at Catholic universities. Theologians need to address effectively the problem of widespread religious illiteracy among most college students. The Vatican document on Catholic higher education, Ex corde ecclesiae, offers a broad and demanding vision of the type of theological and moral education necessary for Catholic colleges and universities. The expectations of Catholic theologians in the academy and beyond it are daunting.

A University That Evangelizes?

After nearly a decade of consultation and discussion, the Vatican issued in 1990 its major statement on the identity and mission of Catholic colleges and universities, Ex corde ecclesiae. One of its claims was that a Catholic university should evangelize. This chapter explores various meanings of evangelization and asks how a Catholic university with academic freedom might evangelize.

Ex corde ecclesiae and the Mandatum

The Vatican document Ex corde ecclesiae expects all faculty who teach Catholic theology to ask their local bishop for a mandatum, that is, a written indication that the theologian teaches what the church teaches theologically. Whether this is a legitimate request for theologians who value academic freedom, what impact it has on what a theologian actually teaches in the classroom, and how differences between bishops and theologians can best be addressed are treated in this chapter. Finally, we explore the impact that the expectation of a mandatum for theologians has on their standing with their peers on campus.

Ex Corde Ecclesiae. O naturze i misji uniwersytetu katolickiego

Jednym z największych osiągnięć umysłowych czasów, określanych mianem Wieków Średnich, było powstanie uniwersytetów. Uniwersytety, stając się motorem rozwoju cywilizacji, powoływane były przez Kościołów i były przejawem wysokiego poziomu kultury europejskiej i chrześcijańskiej. Z czasem jednak, doszły do głosu tendencje sekularystyczne i upaństwawiające. Stąd też, w XIX w., z inicjatywy papieża Leona XIII tworzono lub reaktywowano uniwersytety, które w swojej nazwie zyskały przydomek katolickie. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie kluczowych trendów współczesności – takich jak globalizacja, pluralizm wartości, urynkowienie oraz budowanie społeczeństwa wiedzy – mających wpływ na funkcjonowanie uniwersytetów, w tym uczelni katolickich. Niniejszy artykuł omawia także status prawnego, ale przede wszystkim naturę oraz misję katolickich uniwersytetów.

Duchowa misja uniwersytetu katolickiego według św. Jana Pawła II

Uniwersytet jako „jedyny w swoim rodzaju ośrodek twórczej pracy i promieniowania wiedzy, służący dobru ludzkości”, choć wyrasta z tradycji ukształtowanej przez Kościół, we współczesnych społeczeństwach zglobalizowanych znajduje się w kryzysie, gdyż został w dużej mierze uzależniony od myślenia utylitarystycznego i od czynników merkantylistycznych i przekształcony w model służący interesom społecznej i ekonomicznej ewolucji tych społeczeństw. Artykuł jest próbą całościowego określenia misji uniwersytetu katolickiego na podstawie Konstytucji Ex Corde Ecclesiae Jana Pawła II oraz jego przemówień do świata uniwersyteckiego i środowisk kultury. Misja ta polega na: 1) poszukiwaniu „całej prawdy o naturze, o człowieku i o Bogu” odwołując się do wiary i rozumu i ich zdolności czerpania prawdy z dwóch źródeł: objawienia i rzeczywistości stworzonej; 2) tworzeniu wspólnoty opartej na prawdzie, jednej wizji godności człowieka, wartościach chrześcijańskich oraz wychowaniu do dojrzałości chrześcijańskiej i ludzkiej; 3) przygotowaniu studentów do urzeczywistnienia przypadającego im w Kościele i w świecie powołania obejmującego zarówno udział w ewangelizacji kultur jak i budowanie kultury i cywilizacji godnej człowieka.

Historia, współczesność i przyszłość katolickich szkół prawniczych – perspektywa amerykańska

W artykule przedstawiono genezę, ewolucję i stan obecny katolickich szkół prawniczych w USA na tle zachodzących zmian społecznych i kulturowych. Od lat 60-70. minionego stulecia większość z nominalnie katolickich szkół prawniczych w Stanach Zjednoczonych praktycznie nie różni się od swoich świeckich odpowiedników. W ocenie Autora wyraźną katolicką tożsamość tych szkół należy kształtować, kierując się postanowieniami Konstytucji apostolskiej Jana Pawła II Ex Corde Ecclesiae. W pierwszej kolejności tożsamość ta powinna przejawiać się w działalności badawczo-dydaktycznej. Program nauczania studentów oraz twórczość naukowa wykładowców powinny uwzględniać bogatą katolicką tradycję filozoficzno-teologiczną. Katolickie szkoły prawnicze, nie tylko te w Stanach Zjednoczonych, są powołane do integralności religijnej tożsamości z pełnym profesjonalizmem, wiary z rozumem, respektowania katolickiej doktryny i moralności z działaniem ściśle naukowym i krytycznym ukierunkowanym na poszukiwanie i głoszenie obiektywnej prawdy, przekazywania wiedzy studentom z ich duchowo-intelektualną formacją.

A Educação Superior Católica à Luz do Instrumentum Laboris: educar hoje e amanhã: uma paixão que se renova

O documento “Instrumentum Laboris: educar hoje e amanhã: uma paixão que se renova”,realizado pela Congregação para a Educação Católica a pedido do Papa Bento XVI, em preparaçãoao 50º aniversário da Declaração Gravissimum Educationis e o 25° aniversário da ConstituiçãoApostólica Ex Corde Ecclesiae, tem como objetivo reafirmar o empenho da Igreja no campo daeducação. Neste documento são recordados os pontos referenciais dos dois documentos, ascaracterísticas fundamentais da educação nas escolas e universidades católicas diante dos desafiosque as instituições educativas católicas buscam responder.

Teaching Accounting Ethics Using Ex Corde Ecclesiae

Research has shown that in the private sector, values-based ethics programs are more effective than compliance-based ethics programs (Trevino et al. 1999). Since religious affiliations are a significant driver of values-based behavior, it is appropriate to investigate the means of formally applying a values schema rather than allowing such factors to determine the pedagogy on an ad hoc basis. This paper uses the example of the Catholic Church’s Apostolic Constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae as a guide for designing and implementing a values-based ethics course to fulfil the educational ethics requirements to sit for the CPA exam. A classroom strategy is presented for use that helps students select priorities that align their values with a successful career in accounting. The paper then addresses the process of teaching students how to address and reconcile individual values, organizational culture, social mores, and the client’s expectations.
