Abstract Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is a tree species widely planted not only for timber production but also as a shade tree in urban areas both on the side of the highway (green belt) and other green open areas. The objective of this study was to analyze the genetic variation of growth and wood quality of a mahogany progeny test at the Parung Panjang, Bogor, which will be converted into a seedling seed orchard for high quality seed production. The progeny test was established using a randomized complete block design involving 96 families originating from seven populations (land races) in Java Island, i.e., Cianjur, Sumedang, Tasikmalaya, Magelang, Gundih, Madiun, and Jember. The results showed that the family had a significant effect on all the growth and wood quality parameters. Individual and family heritability for all growth and wood quality traits were categorized into the high, i.e., 0.33 - 0.96 and 0.35 - 0.56, respectively. The selection simulation showed that the selection percentage of 44.68% (45 best families) gave the optimum genetic gain based on growth and wood quality traits.

Pine (Pinus merkusii) is tree species that provides timber and gum rosin. To meet the needs of wood and non wood (gum rosin) products, planting by using superior or high quality seeds are needed. Seed procurements for planting are obtained from seedling seed orchard (SSO). However, Cijambu’s SSO was attacked by pine woolly aphid (Pineus boerneri). Therefore, assessment of Cijambu’s SSO needs to be done to evaluate the severity pest attacks that could affect to the quality and the quantity of seed production. Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method is one of the methods to assess the health level of a stand. The number of trees found in all cluster plots in Cijambu’s SSO were 270 trees. Based on the value of the VCR (Visual Crown Rating), the trees located in all cluster plot have health level between low to high. Based on the value of the VCR showed 38.52% (104 trees) having VCR’s value was high, 49.26% (133 trees) having VCR’s value was middle; 12.22% (33 trees) having VCR’s value was low; and no tree having very low VCR’s value. The average of VCR’s value in all cluster plots were 3.25 and classified as middle health. Based on the value of TDLI (Tree Damage Level Index) from 270 trees in all cluster plot showed that 189 trees (70.00%) in healthy condition; 69 trees (25.56%) in slight damage condition; 11 trees (4.07%) in middle damage condition; and 1 tree (0.37%) in heavy damage condition. The value of damage in all cluster plots (ALI) was 261.22 and classified as in health condition. The trees located in all cluster plots were mostly suitable to be seed sources as 242 trees (89.63%), while 28 trees (10.37%) were not suitable for seed sources. Keywords: Forest Health Monitoring, Pinus merkusii, seedling seed orchard, Tree Damage Level Index, Visual Crown Rating

Improper seed handling of Eucalyptus pellita will reduce seed quality, so as to improve the viability of the seed proper handling techniques are needed. To investigate the seed germination potency as a result of seed handling germination seed tests are needed. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of germination method and paper substrate on the viability of E. pellita seeds.  Seeds used in this study were from seedling seed orchard in South Sumatra, South Kalimantan, and Riau. Seed germination methods used in the laboratory tests were method of top paper and between paper tests, besides that, different papers were used such as: paper substrate namely straw paper, towel paper, filter paper, and newspaper. Factorial experimental design completely randomized was used. The results showed that: (1) the method of germination and paper substrate was significant (2) the best paper substrate and germination method was the method of top paper test with used media of newspaper (germination percentage 204 seedling /0.01 grams).

There are two possibilities on open pollination: cross pollination and self pollination. This research was aimed to identify cross pollination potential within and among provenance, and to determine the flowering behavior of each provenance in seedling seed orchard of cajuputi at Paliyan, Gunungkidul. The research was conducted based on flowering phenology (start of flowering, end of flowering and duration of flowering in one period) for all flowering trees during two flowering periods. The result showed that there was high crossing potential in seedling seed orchard of cajuputi based on flowering synchrony. Land race of Gundih has highest crossing potential due to longevity and intensity of flowering, while the provenance from Northern Australia has the lowest crossing potential. Other provenances (Masarete, Rat Gelombeng, Waipirit, Pelita Jaya, Cotonea, Suli and Western Australia) also have high crossing potential at the time when the number of individual was greatest and flowering intensity highest. This research demonstrated that high crossing potential was found within provenance and among provenances except Northern Australia. The implication of this research deployment of improved seed produced from open pollination in seedling seed orchard was recommended for high crossing potential expressed from flowering synchrony.
