Haas' theorem describes all partchworkings of a given non-singular plane tropical curve $C$ giving rise to a maximal real algebraic curve. The space of such patchworkings is naturally a linear subspace $W_C$ of the $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-vector space $\overrightarrow \Pi_C$ generated by the bounded edges of $C$, and whose origin is the Harnack patchworking. The aim of this note is to provide an interpretation of affine subspaces of $\overrightarrow \Pi_C $ parallel to $W_C$. To this purpose, we work in the setting of abstract graphs rather than plane tropical curves. We introduce a topological surface $S_\Gamma$ above a trivalent graph $\Gamma$, and consider a suitable affine space $\Pi_\Gamma$ of real structures on $S_\Gamma$ compatible with $\Gamma$. We characterise $W_\Gamma$ as the vector subspace of $\overrightarrow \Pi_\Gamma$ whose associated involutions induce the same action on $H_1(S_\Gamma,\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})$. We then deduce from this statement another proof of Haas' original result. Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

AbstractA real algebraic curve of genus g is a pair (S,〈 τ 〉), where S is a closed Riemann surface of genus g and τ: S → S is a symmetry, that is, an anti-conformal involution. A Schottky uniformization of (S,〈 τ 〉) is a tuple (Ω,Γ,P:Ω → S), where Γ is a Schottky group with region of discontinuity Ω and P:Ω → S is a regular holomorphic cover map with Γ as its deck group, so that there exists an extended Möbius transformation $\widehat{\tau}$ keeping Ω invariant with P o $\widehat{\tau}$=τ o P. The extended Kleinian group K=〈 Γ, $\widehat{\tau}$〉 is called an extended Schottky groups of rank g. The interest on Schottky uniformizations rely on the fact that they provide the lowest uniformizations of closed Riemann surfaces. In this paper we obtain a structural picture of extended Schottky groups in terms of Klein–Maskit's combination theorems and some basic extended Schottky groups. We also provide some insight of the structural picture in terms of the group of automorphisms of S which are reflected by the Schottky uniformization. As a consequence of our structural description of extended Schottky groups, we get alternative proofs to results due to Kalliongis and McCullough (J. Kalliongis and D. McCullough, Orientation-reversing involutions on handlebodies, Trans. Math. Soc. 348(5) (1996), 1739–1755) on orientation-reversing involutions on handlebodies.

A simultaneous arithmetic progression (s.a.p.) of length k consists of k points (xi, yσ(i)), where [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are arithmetic progressions and σ is a permutation. Garcia-Selfa and Tornero asked whether there is a bound on the length of an s.a.p. on an elliptic curve in Weierstrass form over ℚ. We show that 4319 is such a bound for curves over ℝ. This is done by considering translates of the curve in a grid as a graph. A simple upper bound is found for the number of crossings and the "crossing inequality" gives a lower bound. Together these bound the length of an s.a.p. on the curve. We also extend this method to bound the k for which a real algebraic curve can contain k points from a k × k grid. Lastly, these results are extended to complex algebraic curves.

For an integern≥2, letp(z)=∏k=1n(z−αk)andq(z)=∏k=1n(z−βk), whereαk,βkare real. We find the number of connected components of the real algebraic curve{(x,y)∈ℝ2:|p(x+iy)|−|q(x+iy)|=0}for someαkandβk. Moreover, in these cases, we show that each connected component contains zeros ofp(z)+q(z), and we investigate the locus of zeros ofp(z)+q(z).
