Let $S_{h,m}$, $h>0$, $m\in {\mathbb N}$, be the spaces of polynomial splines of order $m$ of deficiency 1 with nodes at the points $kh$, $k\in {\mathbb Z}$. We obtain exact values of the best $(\alpha, \beta)$-approximations by spaces $S_{h,m}\cap L_1({\mathbb R})$ in the space $L_1({\mathbb R})$ for the classes $W^r_{1,1}({\mathbb R})$, $r\in {\mathbb N}$, of functions, defined on the whole real line, integrable on ${\mathbb R}$ and such that their $r$th derivatives belong to the unit ball of $L_1({\mathbb R})$. These results generalize the well-known G.G. Magaril-Ilyaev's and V.M. Tikhomirov's results on the exact values of the best approximations of classes $W^r_{1,1}({\mathbb R})$ by splines from $S_{h,m}\cap L_1({\mathbb R})$ (case $\alpha=\beta=1$), as well as are non-periodic analogs of the V.F. Babenko's result on the best non-symmetric approximations of classes $W^r_1({\mathbb T})$ of $2\pi$-periodic functions with $r$th derivative belonging to the unit ball of $L_1({\mathbb T})$ by periodic polynomial splines of minimal deficiency. As a corollary of the main result, we obtain exact values of the best one-sided approximations of classes $W^r_1$ by polynomial splines from $S_{h,m}({\mathbb T})$. This result is a periodic analogue of the results of A.A. Ligun and V.G. Doronin on the best one-sided approximations of classes $W^r_1$ by spaces $S_{h,m}({\mathbb T})$.

Abstract The author compares the Gleason distance with the distance of Euclid in the unit disk in the upper half plane. The concept of “the Gleason distance” was formulated in the work of H.S. Bear [1] The Gleason distance is defined as follows (see [1]): d = sup |f(z2)-f(z1)|, f(Z)εB1(K) where B 1 (K) is the unit ball in the space of bounded analytic in K functions. The author of the article proves that in the circle K the distances of Gleason and Euclid are equal only when the points are opposite. He found necessary and sufficient conditions, when the distances are equal for the two given points which are symmetrical about the ordinate axis.

Assume that $p\in [1,\infty ]$ and $u=P_{h}[\phi ]$, where $\phi \in L^{p}(\mathbb{S}^{n-1},\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $u(0) = 0$. Then we obtain the sharp inequality $\lvert u(x) \rvert \le G_p(\lvert x \rvert )\lVert \phi \rVert_{L^{p}}$ for some smooth function $G_p$ vanishing at $0$. Moreover, we obtain an explicit form of the sharp constant $C_p$ in the inequality $\lVert Du(0)\rVert \le C_p\lVert \phi \rVert \le C_p\lVert \phi \rVert_{L^{p}}$. These two results generalize and extend some known results from the harmonic mapping theory (D. Kalaj, Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 12 (2018), 545–554, Theorem 2.1) and the hyperbolic harmonic theory (B. Burgeth, Manuscripta Math. 77 (1992), 283–291, Theorem 1).

Our aim in this paper is to deal with boundary growth of spherical means of Sobolev functions of monotone type for the double phase functional \(\Phi_{p,q}(x,t) = t^{p} + (b(x) t)^{q}\) in the unit ball B of \(\mathbb{R}^n\), where \(1 < p < q < \infty\) and \(b(\cdot)\) is a non-negative bounded function on B which is Hölder continuous of order \(\theta \in (0,1]\).
