AbstractLet $$\Delta $$ Δ be a hyperbolic triangle with a fixed area $$\varphi $$ φ . We prove that for all but countably many $$\varphi $$ φ , generic choices of $$\Delta $$ Δ have the property that the group generated by the $$\pi $$ π -rotations about the midpoints of the sides of the triangle admits no nontrivial relations. By contrast, we show for all $$\varphi \in (0,\pi ){\setminus }\mathbb {Q}\pi $$ φ ∈ ( 0 , π ) \ Q π , a dense set of triangles does afford nontrivial relations, which in the generic case map to hyperbolic translations. To establish this fact, we study the deformation space $$\mathfrak {C}_\theta $$ C θ of singular hyperbolic metrics on a torus with a single cone point of angle $$\theta =2(\pi -\varphi )$$ θ = 2 ( π - φ ) , and answer an analogous question for the holonomy map $$\rho _\xi $$ ρ ξ of such a hyperbolic structure $$\xi $$ ξ . In an appendix by Gao, concrete examples of $$\theta $$ θ and $$\xi \in \mathfrak {C}_\theta $$ ξ ∈ C θ are given where the image of each $$\rho _\xi $$ ρ ξ is finitely presented, non-free and torsion-free; in fact, those images will be isomorphic to the fundamental groups of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

AbstractThe deformability condition for submanifolds of fixed degree immersed in a graded manifold can be expressed as a system of first order PDEs. In the particular but important case of ruled submanifolds, we introduce a natural choice of coordinates, which allows to deeply simplify the formal expression of the system, and to reduce it to a system of ODEs along a characteristic direction. We introduce a notion of higher dimensional holonomy map in analogy with the one-dimensional case [29], and we provide a characterization for singularities as well as a deformability criterion.

We construct a representation of the homotopy 2-groupoid of a manifold by means of Chen’s formal homology connections. By using the idea of this 2-holonomy map, we describe a method to obtain a representation of the category of braid cobordisms.

We study the classification of the pairs (N, X) where N is a Stein surface and X is a ℂ-complete holomorphic vector field with isolated singularities on N. We describe the role of transverse sections in the classification of X and give necessary and sufficient conditions on X in order to have N biholomorphic to ℂ2. As a sample of our results, we prove that N is biholomorphic to ℂ2 if H2(N, ℤ) = 0, X has a finite number of singularities and exhibits a singularity with three separatrices or, equivalently, a singularity with first jet of the form [Formula: see text] where λ1/λ2 ∈ ℚ+. We also study flows with many periodic orbits (i.e. orbits diffeomorphic to ℂ*), in a sense we will make clear, proving they admit a meromorphic first integral or they exhibit some special periodic orbit, whose holonomy map is a non-resonant nonlinearizable diffeomorphism map.
