Thoroughness in Explanation of Substructure-Superstructure Relations in Introductory Sociology Textbooks

The introductory sociology course is typically the only course most students take in sociology; hence, the introductory textbook becomes the only sociology textbook they may ever read as college students. The textbook, however, often lacks rigor in explaining concepts. This study focused on the thoroughness of explanations of the relations of substructure and superstructure of society by Karl Max (economic determinism) and Max Weber (ideological determinism) in a sample of introductory sociology textbooks. We found only one textbook to be consistently thorough in explaining both determinisms, and most textbooks were rated as low in their explanations of both concepts. We argue for greater thoroughness in introductory sociology textbooks, especially in the interest of students who participate in online learning and those who may not take another course in sociology and whose impression of the discipline would be framed by the introductory textbook.

Interesses econômicos que incidem sobre o Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD) de 2012 e o guia do livro didático de Sociologia (Economic interests that affect the 2012 National Textbook Program - PNLD - and the Sociology textbook guide)

O presente artigo tem como escopo apresentar o Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNDL) e suas relações com os interesses econômicos. O PNDL é uma política pública para um fim pedagógico, isto é, os alunos(as) do ensino básico das escolas públicas detém o direito de acessá-los. Destarte, é preocupante que a primazia de uma política pública seja dirigida por interesses econômicos que chegam e até ultrapassam a cifra de um bilhão de reais, articulando atores como a autarquia do Ministério da Educação (MEC), o Fundo Nacional de Desenvolvimento da Educação (FNDE) e editoras como a Ática, Brasil, IBEP, FTD, Nacional, Saraiva, Scipione e Moderna. Além disso, o artigo analisa a política de avaliação do livro didático de Sociologia, a partir do Guia do Livro Didático de Sociologia para os anos letivos de 2012, 2013 e 2014. O artigo foi constituído através da leitura de autores críticos aos interesses econômicos concatenados às políticas de avaliação do livro didático.

Making the best of an inappropriate textbook: using an ‘international edition’ to teach critical thinking and intercultural understanding

In this report, I outline and provide examples of an approach to using an international edition of an introductory sociology textbook to facilitate cross-cultural learning and critical thinking skills in an EFL (English as a foreign language) environment at a small engineering university in the United Arab Emirates.
