We report here the preparation (in "one-pot") of a tetra-β″-sulfoleno-meso-aryl-porphyrin in about 80% yield by using an optimized modification of Lindsey's variant of the Adler–Longo approach. The Zn ( II )-, Cu ( II )- and Ni ( II )-complexes of the symmetrical porphyrin were prepared and characterized spectroscopically. Crystal structures of the fluorescent Zn ( II )- and of the non-fluorescent Ni ( II )-tetra-β″-sulfoleno-meso-aryl-porphyrinates showed the highly substituted porphyrin ligands to be nearly perfectly planar. The Zn ( II )-complex of this porphyrin has been used as a thermal precursor of a reactive diene, and — formally — of lateral and diagonal bis-dienes, of a tris-diene and of a tetra-diene, which all underwent [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions in situ with a range of dienophiles. Thus, the tetra-β″-sulfoleno-meso-aryl-porphyrin and its metal complexes represent reactive building blocks, "programmed" for the syntheses of symmetrical and highly functionalized porphyrins.

5-Bromo- and 5,5-dibromo-1,1,1-trihalo-4-methoxypent-3-en-2-ones (brominated enones) have proven to be attractive building blocks for the construction of heterocyclic and polyheterocyclic compounds bearing a trihalomethyl moiety through interesting cyclocondensation, alkylation, and cycloaddition reactions. This review compiles all of the reactions conducted with these brominated enones since they were first disclosed in 2001.1 Introduction2 Synthesis and Initial Applications3 Synthesis Using First-Generation Intermediates4 Synthesis Using Second-Generation Intermediates5 Synthesis Using Third-Generation Intermediates6 Conclusions

The use of (benzo)pyrylium salts as versatile synthetic building blocks has become an attractive platform for the preparation of valuable heterocyclic compounds. Besides other numerous direct applications of (benzo)pyryliums, the intrinsic electrophilic nature of these species or the dipole character of the related oxidopyrylium derivatives have been exploited towards the development of enantioselective transformations such as nucleophilic dearomatization and cycloaddition reactions. This review aims at providing an overview on the relevant catalytic enantioselective methodologies developed in the past years, which are presented considering the involved metal- and/or organic catalytic system, as well as the type of reaction.
