Triacutus subcuticularis is described as an endoparasite of bdelloid rotifers. The infection hypha does not establish in the visceral tissue but grows in the pseudocoel between the cuticle and the epidermis. In this location the thallus grows and divides repeatedly to produce numerous unicellular assimilative segments which pack the subcuticular space of the living host. After death, each hyphal segment produces one or several filiform extensions which bear solitary one-celled, three-pronged spores at the apex. Infection is initiated by the spore impaling the rotifers in the mouth region.

Species and speciation have been called phenomena of sexual organisms, and many of the concepts developed with sexuals in mind. It is clear theoretically, however, that asexuals should be affected in similar ways by the diversifying processes that cause speciation in sexuals. This chapter investigates evidence for species and speciation in organisms with alternative lifestyles. Bdelloid rotifers are presented as a putative case of asexual species, before the theory and evidence for species in bacteria is discussed. Both theoretically and empirically, the notion that bacteria do not diversify into species can be dismissed. There are interesting differences from eukaryotes, including lower rates of recombination and greater frequency of gene transfer between distant relatives, but neither of these seems to prevent divergence into independently evolving species, at least at core genome regions. Experimental evolution is a useful but neglected avenue to test these ideas further.

A taxonomic study on bdelloid rotifers collected from various terrestrial habitats at five different locations in Korea resulted in eight new Korean records and two new species-level taxa, Philodina clypeata  n. sp. and P. verrucosa  n. sp. Among the eight new Korean records, two species- and three subspecies-level taxa are new to Asia as well. These new Korean records also include seven rare species/subspecies-level taxa with poorly known distributions. Habrotrocha gracilis quadridens Schulte and Macrotrachela zickendrahti seda Donner were rediscovered in Korea 64 and 53 years, respectively, after the original descriptions. Habrotrocha ligula aligula Burger, Macrotrachela insulana Donner, M. petulans Milne, M. pinnigera (Murray), and Philodina parvicalcar De Koning have been reported from two to three countries only including their type localities before the present study. In addition, a partial sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (mtCOX1) for P. verrucosa  n. sp. as well as a taxonomic key for the Philodina species recorded from Korea to date are also provided here.
