Approach to the Diagnosis and Configuration of Servo Drives in Heterogeneous Machine Control Systems

In the article a PC-based CNC machine control system is presented which communicates with servo drives and auxiliary input/output devices via EtherCAT bus. LinuxRTAI real-time operating system and LinuxCNC control software were implemented in the PC controller. A software module implementing EtherCAT communication with the servo drives was developed and integrated with LinuxCNC. Experimental results were presented which show the trajectory smoothing capabilities of the control system. Experimental results were also presented that show following errors obtained by running an example trajectory on a linear motion module. Basic parameters that show the control systems capabilities obtained during the experimental tests have been presented. The CNC control system presented in this article was implemented on a 3-axis machine.

The demand for faster operation, higher quality output and increased efficiency in automation and machine control systems has led to increased demands on guidance systems. Innovation of re-circulating, linear bearing guide technology has launched that option as the preferred choice for most precision linear motion stages. As the use of re-circulating linear guides increases, many vendors have entered the market, producing nearly identical products. All vendors promote similar load capabilities, running speeds and accuracies. A machine designer has difficulty in selecting a specific brand. An extensive study was conducted to evaluate the running accuracy of several commercially available, re-circulating bearings and configurations. This paper will describe the results of the study and explain the reasons for various inaccuracies. These results will help understand the subtle details of the different styles.
