AbstractTheorem 1. (◊ℵ1,) If B is an infinite Boolean algebra (BA), then there is B1, such that ∣ Aut (B1) ≤∣B1∣ = ℵ1 and 〈B1, Aut (B1)〉 ≡ 〈B, Aut(B)〉.Theorem 2. (◊ℵ1) There is a countably compact logic stronger than first-order logic even on finite models.This partially answers a question of H. Friedman. These theorems appear in §§1 and 2.Theorem 3. (a) (◊ℵ1) If B is an atomic ℵ-saturated infinite BA, Ψ Є Lω1ω and 〈B, Aut (B)〉 ⊨Ψ then there is B1, Such that ∣Aut(B1)∣ ≤ ∣B1∣ =ℵ1, and 〈B1, Aut(B1)〉⊨Ψ. In particular if B is 1-homogeneous so is B1. (b) (a) holds for B = P(ω) even if we assume only CH.

The distinguishing number $\Delta(X)$ of a graph $X$ is the least positive integer $n$ for which there exists a function $f:V(X)\to\{0,1,2,\cdots,n-1\}$ such that no nonidentity element of $\hbox{Aut}(X)$ fixes (setwise) every inverse image $f^{-1}(k)$, $k\in\{0,1,2,\cdots,n-1\}$. All infinite, locally finite trees without pendant vertices are shown to be 2-distinguishable. A proof is indicated that extends 2-distinguishability to locally countable trees without pendant vertices. It is shown that every infinite, locally finite tree $T$ with finite distinguishing number contains a finite subtree $J$ such that $\Delta(J)=\Delta(T)$. Analogous results are obtained for the distinguishing chromatic number, namely the least positive integer $n$ such that the function $f$ is also a proper vertex-coloring.

AbstractIn the paper we investigate topological properties of a topological Brandt λ0-extension B0λ(S) of a semitopological monoid S with zero. In particular we prove that for every Tychonoff pseudocompact (resp., Hausdorff countably compact, Hausdorff compact) semitopological monoid S with zero there exists a unique semiregular pseudocompact (resp., Hausdorff countably compact, Hausdorff compact) extension B0λ(S) of S and establish their Stone-Cˇ ech and Bohr compactifications. We also describe a category whose objects are ingredients in the constructions of pseudocompact (resp., countably compact, sequentially compact, compact) topological Brandt λ0- extensions of pseudocompact (resp., countably compact, sequentially compact, compact) semitopological monoids with zeros.
