Abstract The OPE between the composite b ghost and the unintegrated vertex operator for massless states of the pure spinor superstring is computed and shown to reproduce the structure of the bosonic string result. The double pole vanishes in the Lorenz gauge and the single pole is shown to be equal to the corresponding integrated vertex operator.

After reviewing the Green-Schwarz superstring using the approach of Siegel, the superstring is covariantly quantized by constructing a BRST operator from the fermionic constraints and a bosonic pure spinor ghost variable. Physical massless vertex operators are constructed and, for the first time, N-point tree amplitudes are computed in a manifestly ten-dimensional super-Poincaré covariant manner. Quantization can be generalized to curved supergravity backgrounds and the vertex operator for fluctuations around AdS5×S5 is explicitly constructed.

Abstract The construction of the ghost number zero and one vertex operators for the 11D pure spinor superparticle will be revisited. In this sense, an alternative way of defining the ghost number one vertex operator will be given after introducing a ghost number -2 operator made out of physical operators defined on the 11D non-minimal pure spinor superspace. This procedure will make explicit and transparent the relation between the ghost number three and one vertex operators. In addition, using a non-Lorentz covariant b-ghost, ghost number zero and two vertex operators satisfying standard descent equations will be presented in full form.

We start from the Maurer–Cartan (MC) equations of the [Formula: see text] superalgebras satisfied by the left-invariant superforms realized on supercoset manifolds of the corresponding supergroups and we derive some new pure spinor constraints. They are obtained by "ghostifying" the MC forms and extending the differential d to a BRST differential. From the superalgebras [Formula: see text] we single out different subalgebras [Formula: see text] associated with the different cosets [Formula: see text]: each choice of ℍ leads to a different weakening of the pure spinor constraints. In each case, the number of parameter is counted and we show that in the cases of Osp (6|4)/ U (3)× SO (1, 3), Osp (4|4)/ SO (3) × SO (1, 3) and finally Osp (4|4)/ U (2) × SO (1, 3) the bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom match in order to provide a c = 0 superconformal field theory. We construct both the Green–Schwarz and the pure spinor sigma model for the case Osp (6|4)/ U(3) × SO (1, 3) corresponding to AdS 4 ×ℙ3. The pure spinor sigma model can be consistently quantized.

All the BRST-invariant operators in pure spinor formalism in d = 10 can be represented as BRST commutators, such as [Formula: see text] where λ+ is the U(5) component of the pure spinor transforming as [Formula: see text]. Therefore, in order to secure nontriviality of BRST cohomology in pure spinor string theory, one has to introduce "small Hilbert space" and "small operator algebra" for pure spinors, analogous to those existing in RNS formalism. As any invariant vertex operator in RNS string theory can also represented as a commutator V = {Q brst , LV} where L = -4c∂ξξe-2ϕ, we show that mapping [Formula: see text] to L leads to identification of the pure spinor variable λα in terms of RNS variables without any additional nonminimal fields. We construct the RNS operator satisfying all the properties of λα and show that the pure spinor BRST operator ∮λαdα is mapped (up to similarity transformation) to the BRST operator of RNS theory under such a construction.
