AbstractWe study the quantum structure of four-dimensional $${{\mathcal {N}}}=2$$ N = 2 superfield sigma-model formulated in harmonic superspace in terms of the omega-hypermultiplet superfield $$\omega $$ ω . The model is described by harmonic superfield sigma-model metric $$g_{ab}(\omega )$$ g ab ( ω ) and two potential-like superfields $$L^{++}_{a}(\omega )$$ L a + + ( ω ) and $$L^{(+4)}(\omega )$$ L ( + 4 ) ( ω ) . In bosonic component sector this model describes some hyper-Kähler manifold. The manifestly $${{\mathcal {N}}}=2$$ N = 2 supersymmetric covariant background-quantum splitting is constructed and the superfield proper-time technique is developed to calculate the one-loop effective action. The one-loop divergences of the superfield effective action are found for arbitrary $$g_{ab}(\omega ), L^{++}_{a}(\omega ), L^{(+4)}(\omega )$$ g ab ( ω ) , L a + + ( ω ) , L ( + 4 ) ( ω ) , where some specific analogy between the algebra of covariant derivatives in the sigma-model and the corresponding algebra in the $${{\mathcal {N}}}=2$$ N = 2 SYM theory is used. The component structure of divergences in the bosonic sector is discussed.

We revisit universal features of duality in linear and nonlinear relativistic scalar and Abelian 1-form theories with single or multiple fields, which exhibit ordinary or generalized global symmetries. We show that such global symmetries can be interpreted as generalized Killing isometries on a suitable, possibly graded, target space of fields or its jet space when the theory contains higher derivatives. This is realized via a generalized sigma model perspective motivated from the fact that higher spin particles can be Nambu–Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken generalized global symmetries. We work out in detail the 2D examples of a compact scalar and the massless Heisenberg pion fireball model and the 4D examples of Maxwell, Born–Infeld, and ModMax electrodynamics. In all cases we identify the ’t Hooft anomaly that obstructs the simultaneous gauging of both global symmetries and confirm the anomaly matching under duality. These results readily generalize to higher gauge theories for p-forms. For multifield theories, we discuss the transformation of couplings under duality as two sets of Buscher rules for even or odd differential forms.

Abstract We derive, within the Hamiltonian formalism, the classical exchange algebra of a lambda deformed string sigma model in a symmetric space directly from a 4d holomorphic Chern-Simons theory. The explicit forms of the extended Lax connection and R-matrix entering the Maillet bracket of the lambda model are explained from a symmetry principle. This approach, based on a gauge theory, may provide a mechanism for taming the non-ultralocality that afflicts most of the integrable string theories propagating in coset spaces.

Abstract Two distinct η-deformations of strings on AdS5×S5 can be defined; both amount to integrable quantum deformations of the string non-linear sigma model, but only one is itself a superstring background. In this paper we compare their conjectured all-loop worldsheet S matrices and derive the corresponding Bethe equations. We find that, while the S matrices are apparently different, they lead to the same Bethe equations. Moreover, in either case the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix, which encode the conserved charges of each system, also coincide. We conclude that the integrable structure underlying the two constructions is essentially the same. Finally, we write down the full Bethe-Yang equations describing the asymptotic spectrum of the superstring background.

Abstract In this work, higher-derivative corrections of the non-linear sigma model of both even and odd intrinsic-parity sectors are systematically studied, focusing on ordered amplitudes of flavor scalars in massless limit. It should correspond to a theory known as chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) without external sources and with only single-trace operators. We briefly overview its formal development and apply new S-matrix methods to its amplitude constructions. The bottom-up analysis of the tree-level amplitudes of different orders and multiplicities focuses on the formal structure of general ChPT. Possible theoretical simplifications based on the Kleiss-Kuijf and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations are presented. Finally, in the same context, the comparison with the so-called Z-function, which is connected with string theory, is also discussed.
