AbstractIn the intensively farmed, homogenous agricultural landscape of the North China Plain, family graveyards form distinct cultural landscape features. In addition to their cultural value, these graveyards represent semi-natural habitat islands whose potential roles in biodiversity conservation and ecological functioning has remained poorly understood. In this study, we investigated plant species richness on 199 family graveyards of different ages and sizes. In accordance with biogeography theory, both overall and insect-pollinated plant species richness increased with area and age of graveyards. Even small graveyards show a strong potential for conserving local plant richness, and a mosaic of both large and small family graveyards could play an important role in the conservation of farmland biodiversity and related ecosystem functions. The launch of agri-environmental measures that conserve and create semi-natural habitats, in turn benefitting agricultural biodiversity and ecological functioning, has proven difficult in China due to the shortage of dispensable arable land. Given the great value of family graveyards as semi-natural habitats reflected in our study, we propose to focus preliminary efforts on conserving these landscape features as existing, widespread and culturally important semi-natural habitat islands. This would represent an effective, complementary policy to a subsequent re-establishment of other semi-natural habitats for the conservation of biodiversity and ecological functioning in agricultural landscapes.

AbstractEast African mountains constitute a network of isolated habitat islands among dry savannah and are thus ideal for studying species diversification processes. This study elucidated the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships of all bushcricket species comprising the genus Aerotegmina. Our analysis indicated that large-scale climatic and topographic processes in Africa are likely to have driven speciation in this group, and revealed the cytogenetic traits of the species. Molecular phylogeny supported the monophyly of Aerotegmina and showed that the genus probably originated in the old Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania and Kenya. Two lineages were distinguished: small- and large-sized species with geographically distinct habitats. The underlying processes are thought to be eight dispersals, ten vicariance events, and one extinction event linked to repeated fragmentation of the African rainforest. Those processes, in conjunction with habitat change, probably also led to the spatial separation of the species into a northern clade with a diploid number of chromosomes 2n = 32 + X0 or 2n = 30 + neo-XY and a southern clade with a reduced number of chromosomes (2n = 28 + X0 or 24 + neo-X1X2Y). Karyotype analysis suggests that Aerotegmina is currently in the process of speciation.

Ecological theory has long undervalued the contribution of small remnants of native vegetation to nature conservation. This study provides data on colony persistence of remnant-dependent wood-eating termites in 28 remnants of mature wandoo (Eucalyptus capillosa) trees in paddock situations in the agricultural south-west of Western Australia. Remnants ranged in size from 2 to 30 trees, and in spatial isolation from 50 to 650 m. All remnants have been exposed to livestockrelated disturbance for >40 years. This study found that (1) Small remnants of eucalypt trees on farms retain important functional representatives, i.e., wood-eating termites for nutrient-cycling, and high species numbers. (2) Seventeen species have the capacity to establish and maintain colonies in remnants =5 trees. (3) Spatial isolation has no significant influence on the total number of termite species. (4) The number of trees (r = 0.60) and quantity of dead wood in the remnant (r = 0.86) were significant indicators of total termite species number. Larger remnants with low quantities of wood supported few termites, however. (5) Rare as well as common species persisted in small remnants. (6) Alate wing-size was a significant indicator of the occurrence of the six most common termite species in remnants (r = 0.84). The implication of isolation effects for rare species with limited powers of dispersal is self-evident, as is the need for the creation of habitat linkeages to reduce the effects of spatial isolation on the native fauna.
