Abstract Background Privacy preserving record linkage (PPRL) methods using Bloom filters have shown promise for use in operational linkage settings. However real-world evaluations are required to confirm their suitability in practice. Methods An extract of records from the Western Australian (WA) Hospital Morbidity Data Collection 2011–2015 and WA Death Registrations 2011–2015 were encoded to Bloom filters, and then linked using privacy-preserving methods. Results were compared to a traditional, un-encoded linkage of the same datasets using the same blocking criteria to enable direct investigation of the comparison step. The encoded linkage was carried out in a blinded setting, where there was no access to un-encoded data or a ‘truth set’. Results The PPRL method using Bloom filters provided similar linkage quality to the traditional un-encoded linkage, with 99.3% of ‘groupings’ identical between privacy preserving and clear-text linkage. Conclusion The Bloom filter method appears suitable for use in situations where clear-text identifiers cannot be provided for linkage.

Purpose The authors wanted to find out if small businesses adopted strengths-based approaches and whether they were beneficial Design/methodology/approach The interviewees came from small businesses in Western Australia with between five and 19 employees in the motor vehicle industry where there are high-value products. There were 30 participants from 17 businesses, including owners, managers and employees, such as technicians, mechanics and tire fitters. Data was gathered using semi-structured face-to-face interviews of about 40 minutes. Findings The researchers found that the managers used an SBA to select employees during periods of temporary employment. But they did not use an SBA for employee selection during interviews, training or performance evaluations. Originality/value The authors said it was the first empirical study of the SBA in small businesses. It had practical lessons for businesses. First, the data suggested poor awareness of SBA by managers and many need practical guidance from small business advisors. Second, managers found it hard to assess strengths and relied on observations. Software tools could help. Finally, the characteristics of small businesses could help them adopt the new approach. These include lots of face-to-face interaction between managers and employees.

This study demonstrates a multi-modal analytical sequence suited to the characterisation of sandy soils, which remain an underutilised form of forensic trace evidence. Within the Swan Coastal Plain in Perth, Western Australia, most soils are heavily leached with only small deviations in their mineral compositions. Traditional soil analyses are hence rendered inappropriate for use due to the lack of clay and organic matter. This has led to inorganic methods of analysis predominating, in addition to experimentation with modified techniques. One example is utilisation of the quartz-recovered fine fraction, which is suitable for dry, quartz-dominated sandy soils. In this study, preliminary investigations used the spectroscopic techniques microspectrophotometry, infrared spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction, to develop a multi-faceted approach for the forensic analysis of the quartz fine fraction of soils. These data were then combined with principal component analysis to demonstrate how chemometrics can assist with objective characterisation and differentiation of sandy soil samples for forensic purposes. Chemometric analysis has not previously been attempted with data obtained from the quartz fine fraction. This methodology is transferable to other jurisdictions where dry, sandy soils predominate.

Studies in the virtual heritage (VH) domain identify collaboration (social interaction), engagement, and a contextual relationship as key elements of interaction design that influence users’ experience and cultural learning in VH applications. The purpose of this study is to validate whether collaboration (social interaction), engaging experience, and a contextual relationship enhance cultural learning in a collaborative and multi-modal mixed reality (MR) heritage environment. To this end, we have designed and implemented a cloud-based collaborative and multi-modal MR application aiming at enhancing user experience and cultural learning in museums. A conceptual model was proposed based on collaboration, engagement, and relationship in the context of MR experience. The MR application was then evaluated at the Western Australian Shipwrecks Museum by experts, archaeologists, and curators from the gallery and the Western Australian Museum. Questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and observation were used to collect data. The results suggest that integrating collaborative and multi-modal interaction methods with MR technology facilitates enhanced cultural learning in VH.

Abstract Background Infective endocarditis is a disease that carries high morbidity and mortality. The primary endpoint of this study is to assess factors associated with in-hospital mortality in patients undergoing valvular surgery for infective endocarditis. The secondary endpoint of this study is to assess the incidence of post-operative stroke, renal failure, complete heart block and recurrence. Methods Between the years of 2015 to 2019, a total of 89 patients underwent surgery for infective endocarditis at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Western Australia. Data was collected from the Australia and New Zealand Cardiac Surgery Database from 2015 to 2019 as well as patients electronic medical record. A number of preoperative and perioperative factors were assessed in relation to patient mortality and morbidity. Univariate and multivariate logistical regression analysis was done to assess for the association between factors and in-hospital morbidity and mortality. Results A total of 89 patients underwent surgery for infective endocarditis from 2015 to 2019, affecting a total of 101 valves. The mean age of patients was 53.7 ± 16.5. A total of 79 patients had a positive blood culture pre-operatively, with Staphylococcus Aureus being the most frequently cultured organism (39%). Fourteen patients (16%) were deemed emergent and underwent surgery within 24 h of review. A total of five patients died within their hospital stay postoperatively. Variables significantly associated with mortality on univariate analysis were intravenous drug use, emergent surgery, perioperative dialysis, perioperative inotropes, cardiopulmonary bypass time and cross clamp time. Only CBP time was significantly associated with mortality on multivariate analysis. A total of 19 patients (21%) required hemodialysis after surgery, 10 patients sustained a postoperative stroke (11%), 11 patients developed a complete heart block post operatively (12%) and endocarditis recurred in 10 patients (11%). Conclusion Prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass times were significantly associated with mortality. This study is novel to report a lower mortality rate than previously quoted in the literature. We also report our findings of organisms, preoperative embolic phenomena and surgery in a Western Australian population. We recommend that all patients with endocarditis are discussed in multidisciplinary forum.

Uncertainty about taxonomy and nomenclature of the Australian long-necked turtle Chelodina oblonga has ensued since its description by Gray in 1841. This has been due to the general nature of information about provenance of the lectotype specimen and the ostensible morphological similarity of the specimen to another taxon from northern Australia that confused Gray and many subsequent workers. The south-western Australian provenance of the specimen has recently been confirmed by Shea et al. (2020). The present paper provides a detailed consideration of morphology of the specimen and compares it with other specimens available to Gray and to larger series that are now available. The study elucidates morphological aspects that have underlain the history of confusion and it highlights a number of characters that consistently differentiate adults of the relevant taxa. These demonstrate that morphology of the C. oblonga lectotype conforms with the taxon from the south-west of Western Australia, as has also been confirmed by recently published investigations of mitogenomics and historical information about provenance of the lectotype.

This study aimed to use systems thinking tools to understand network relationships to inform discussions, policy, and practice to improve nutrition, physical activity, and overweight/obesity prevention activities in a Western Australian local government area. An audit of nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention activities was conducted, and identified organizations were invited to participate in an organizational network survey. Social network analysis (SNA) determined the extent to which organizations shared information, knowledge, and resources; engaged in joint program planning; applied for and shared funding; and identified operational barriers and contributors. SNA data were mapped and analyzed using UCINET 6 and Netdraw software. Five organizations within the network were identified as core; the remainder were periphery. The strongest networks were sharing information, and the weakest was funding. The connections were centralized to one organization, enabling them to readily influence other organizations and network operations. Remaining organizations indicated limited partnership across the networks. Strengthened collaborations and partnerships are essential to health promotion, as they extend reach and organizational capabilities. This study provides a process for undertaking network analysis, identifying leverage points to facilitate communication and information sharing, and reorienting of collaborations and partnerships to consolidate scarce resources and act strategically within a bounded area. There is a need for stronger relationships between organizations and a reorientation of partnerships to facilitate resource sharing within the local government area, to improve nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention practices. SNA can assist in understanding organizational prevention networks within a bounded area to support future planning of practices and policy.

This part of the Canarium (Canarium) urceus (Linné, 1758) after Abbott (1960) revision examines the Australian species of that complex. Currently, there is one recognised species, Canarium (Canarium) orrae (Abbott, 1960), which is divided herein into two species, with the description of Canarium (Canarium) darwinense n. sp. from the Van Diemen Gulf and Darwin surrounds. The C. (C.) darwinense is distinguished from C. (C.) orrae in morphological form. The southern range of C. (C.) orrae is extended to Monkey Mia, Shark Bay. Examples of C. (C.) orrae were also noted from the North Coast of Sumbawa, Indonesia, and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. While there is a geographic break in the distribution of C. (C.) orrae creating two populations, Western Australian and Gulf of Carpentaria, populations from these two ranges could not be distinguished using morphology. Future research will likely show genetic differences as a consequence of drift caused by isolation, thus leading to the potential recognition of two cryptic subspecies.
