The precision with which relative‐gravity values may be obtained by the use of suitable pendulum equipment is illustrated by actual data obtained in establishing calibration stations used to facilitate the calibration of gravimeters. A résumé of the operating technique, together with the salient features of the Gulf pendulum equipment is given in connection with a tabulated summary of the various factors which must be considered in designing and operating pendulums in order to attain the desired precision of [Formula: see text] g.

Recent advances in the precision obtainable in length and time measurements have made it possible to determine the absolute value of the acceleration due to gravity with greater accuracy than has hitherto been possible. An accurate knowledge of the actual value of the acceleration due to gravity is essential, for example, in connexion with the determination of the absolute unit of electric current by means of the current balance. It has been usual to refer relative gravity measurements made in this country to the absolute value determined at Potsdam by Kühnen and Furtwängler (1906) over 30 years ago, and although relative determinations can now be carried out with an accuracy approaching one part in a million, it appears that the basic Potsdam value may be in error by something between one and two parts in 100,000. Very few absolute determinations have been made within the last 50 years, but those which have been carried out at various stations show discrepancies of this order when related to the Potsdam value by relative determinations.

Results of relative gravity measurements on seven sites of Northern Caucasus region, which form a reference network for determination of vertical movements of the region by a gravimetric method, are presented. To spread this network to other parts of the region without carrying out expensive absolute measurements, the technique based on measurement of the gravity increment between the new and reference sites by the high-precision relative gravity meter is developed. Two-years observations showed availability of this technique, nevertheless, for reliable determination of the site vertical movements, the observations on longer time interval are necessary
