AbstractWhilst prior works have characterised the affordances of prototyping methods in terms of generating knowledge about a product or process, the types, or ‘dimensions’ of knowledge towards which they contribute are not fully understood. In this paper we adapt the concept of ‘design domains’ as a method to interpret, and better understand the contributions of different prototyping methods to design knowledge in new product development. We first synthesise a set of ten dimensions for design knowledge from a review of literature in design-related fields. A study was then conducted in which participants from engineering backgrounds completed a Likert-type questionnaire to quantify the perceived contributions to design knowledge of 90 common prototyping methods against each dimension. We statistically analyse results to identify patterns in the knowledge contribution of different methods. Results reveal that methods exhibit significantly different contribution profiles, suggesting different methods to be suited to different knowledge. Thus, this paper indicates potential for new methods, methodology and processes to leverage such characterisations for better selection and sequencing of methods in the prototyping process.

The rapid prototyping technology was introduced, including its definition, principle and characteristics. The advantages of rapid prototyping technology in new product development were analyzed. Application of rapid prototyping technology in design of mechanical parts, industrial model, medical model, ceramic products, automobile model and products based on ergonomics was discussed. The feasibility of rapid prototyping technology in product design and the optimization direction was prospected.

This study examined design cases involving new product development related to Taiwanese home appliance firms for exploring the strategic groups formed by local firms and their performance in new product development and other issues related to product design strategy. The questionnaire survey demonstrates that Taiwanese home appliance firms, in terms of product design strategy, can be grouped into passive response, aggressive response, and R&D focus groups. In their response to the challenges faced following Taiwan joining the WTO, firms in different strategic groups exhibited different financial and non-financial performance. Furthermore, they differed significantly in dealing with product design activities, particularly new product development types, product design features, motivations, and design appeals. Differences in these aspects may be the reason for their differences in new product development performance.

PurposeAlthough product design is a fundamental element in the transition towards the circular economy, the knowledge of practices, methods and tools oriented to circular product design has not been widely developed. This study aims to contribute to the circular economy research area by investigating and analyzing the main design approaches to circular products and their relationship to new product development.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted a systematic review and qualitative analysis of 120 articles. In these studies, the authors analyzed aspects such as design strategies used, the barriers to the adoption of circular product design and the relationships between the phases of new product development processes with circular product design studies.FindingsThe findings revealed that the circular product design approach has added new design strategies to those already recommended by ecodesign, such as multiple use cycles, emotional durability and biomimicry. Furthermore, the results showed that most circular product design articles focus on the planning and concept development phases of the new product development process.Originality/valueIn this article, the authors systematized the findings of an emergent research area: the development of new products for the circular economy. Its main contributions lie in the identification of design strategies, the classification of Design for X approaches, analysis of such approaches during the new product development process and discussion of their main barriers. Finally, this study presents contributions for managers and designers who are starting the transition to a circular strategy.
