Elements  of the modern day vision on sustainable forest management are discussed. Some  aspects of the concept are analysed, focusing on the natural definition in  comparison with the ecosystem definition. The significance of ecological  stability is emphasized. It is pointed out that perhaps the most important  aspect of forest stability and sustainability is the ability to retain soil  fertility. Attention is paid to the importance of species composition, the  role of organic matter, the impact of forest use and the problems of forest  engineering.     In order to reach sustainable forest management, a number of strategies can  be applied, based either on the market or the state. There is a need for  measurable criteria and indicators for the evaluation of sustainability.  Therefore new programmes of scientific sampling or even basic research are  still needed.     Forest sustainability provides still a dramatic lot of questions and  efforts, a.o. on the potentiality of sustainable forestry.

The article outlines the main strategic guidelines for sustainable spatial development of forest management at different hierarchical levels of forest management (global, national, regional and local), which are related to the formation of a sustainable forest management system on an ecosystem basis in accordance with international principles and agreements on sustainable forest development. Emphasis is placed on the formation of the system of international ecological management of forestry for the implementation of the ecosystem approach in the system of spatial forest management. The necessity of forming a fundamentally new state ecologically oriented forest policy of Ukraine, based on the reassessment of human views on the role of forests in the global environment, was stated. The basic requirements for ecologically oriented national forest policy in the field of rational use and reproduction and protection of forest resources are formed. The main ways of solving environmental problems in the system of sustainable forestry are also outlined. The main directions of long-term development of global forestry are determined. The main directions of long-term development of global forestry are determined. The main components of international regulation of relations between states in the field of compliance with environmental requirements in the field of forestry have been formed.

Forest characterization with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data has recently garnered much scientific and operational attention. The number of forest inventory attributes that may be directly measured with LiDAR is limited; however, when considered within the context of all the measured and derived attributes required to complete a forest inventory, LiDAR can be a valuable tool in the inventory process. In this paper, we present the status of LiDAR remote sensing of forests, including issues related to instrumentation, data collection, data processing, costs, and attribute estimation. The information needs of sustainable forest management provide the context within which we consider future opportunities for LiDAR and automated data processing.
