This paper reports on the characterization of three poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)-based photorefractive composites with different non-linear optical (NLO) chromophores at an operating wavelength of 632.8 nm. The strength of the photoconductivity and the magnitude of the space-charge field (E SC) in the photorefractive composites are strongly affected by the chromophore’s highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). The magnitude of E SC increased with the lowering of the HOMO level of the NLO chromophores in the PVK composites.

AbstractTwo types of mineral fillers, talc and mica, were compounded into polypropylene (PP) via a twin-screw extruder. The morphologies and mechanical properties of the resultant composites were investigated. The dispersion of minerals in PP was observed using Focused Ion Beam (FIB) techniques. The particle size distribution (PSD) and aspect ratio (AR) of particles in the polymer phase were obtained from FIB image analysis. It was found that FIB imaging displays directly the micron to mesoscale level dispersion of particles in polymeric composites. The technique has significant potential for characterizing such materials, having some advantages over ‘traditional’ scanning and transmission electron microscopy in terms of generating representative data in a realistic timescale. The PSD and AR distribution and degree of dispersion in the composites give insights into the modification of mechanical properties of the composites studied.

Selected fillers were incorporated to prepare polytherimide composite. The influence of fillers on the thermo-oxidative stability of the composite was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that at optical filler loading and characteristics, the polymer composite became superior in its thermo-oxidative stability that is very promising in widening the window of service temperature of polyimides for extremely high temperature conditions where most polymeric composites fail. The findings should prove useful in developing high-temperature polymer composites for aerospace and electronics applications.
