Abstract We study standard Einstein-Maxwell theory minimally coupled to a complex valued and self-interacting scalar field. We demonstrate that new, previously unnoticed spherically symmetric, charged black hole solutions with scalar hair exist in this model for sufficiently large gravitational coupling and sufficiently small electromagnetic coupling. The novel scalar hair has the form of a spatially oscillating “wave packet” and back-reacts on the space-time such that both the Ricci and the Kretschmann scalar, respectively, possess qualitatively similar oscillations.

Propagation of sound waves in a flowing fluid can be viewed as a minimally coupled massless scalar field propagating in curved spacetime. The analogue Hawking radiation from a spherically symmetric acoustic black hole and a (2 + 1)-dimensional rotating acoustic black hole are investigated respectively in Damour–Ruffini’s method. The emission rate and Hawking temperature are obtained, which are related to acoustic black holes parameter.

The no-scalar-hair conjecture rules out the existence of asymptotically flat black holes with a scalar dressing for a large class of theories. No-scalar-hair theorems have been proved for the cases of neutral black holes and for charged black holes in the Maxwell electrodynamics. These theorems, however, do not apply in the case of nonlinear electrodynamics. In the present work numerical solutions describing charged black holes coupled to Euler–Heisenberg type nonlinear electrodynamics in scalar–tensor theories of gravity with massless scalar field are found. In comparison to the corresponding solution in General Relativity the presented solution has a simpler causal structure the reason for which is the presence of the scalar field. The present class of black holes has a single, nondegenerate horizon, i.e. its causal structure resembles that of the Schwarzschild black hole.

Abstract In a recent paper, Hod started a study on no scalar hair theorem for asymptotically flat spherically symmetric neutral horizonless reflecting compact stars. In fact, Hod’s approach only rules out massive scalar fields. In the present paper, for massless scalar fields outside neutral horizonless reflecting compact stars, we provide a rigorous mathematical proof on no hair theorem. We show that asymptotically flat spherically symmetric neutral horizonless reflecting compact stars cannot support exterior massless scalar field hairs.
