The data presented by Soule et al1. on the clinical application of the Brazelton Neonatal Scale in differentiating addicted infants from a control group is reminiscent of studies that our group reported on the effects of obstetric meperidine on neonatal status assessment.2 A one-month follow-up of these infants (Brackbill et al.2, Table 2) has revealed persistent habituation abnormalities. Indeed, the Assessment Scale is clinically useful in predicting the physiologically distressed infant. However, its influence on the therapeutic management of the addicted newborn is somewhat tenuous.
