A residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed chil dren assumes almost complete responsibility for those in its care. This necessitates some modification of the oft-heard admonition, "Don't treat the symptom." The staff of the institution must concern itself with each child's overt behavior as well as with the unconscious feelings and fantasies that give rise to it.
