Integrating liberal education, business, and high-impact practices – the case of George Mason university’s school of business

Purpose In College Learning for the New Global Century, the National Leadership Council of Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP) argue for a liberal education for all students because “(i)n an economy fueled by innovation, the capabilities developed through a liberal education have become America’s most valuable economic asset.” (LEAP, 2007). The Business for a Better World Center and the School of Business at George Mason University endorse this view and have applied the liberal education approach to the study of business. This paper aims to explore the current environment of business education, the role of liberal education and the school’s programs and their benefits. Design/methodology/approach This paper relies on a case-study approach. Findings In this paper, the authors explore how George Mason University’s School of Business brings a liberal education approach to business education and draws on a combination of high impact practices, such as first-year seminars, common intellectual experiences, learning communities, collaborative assignments, undergraduate research, community-based learning, internships, capstone courses and projects and diversity and global learning (Kuh, 2008). Mason’s experience demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of this integration. Originality/value This case study provides unique insight into how business schools can integrate a liberal education approach into business education with successful results. As such, the paper contributes to the growing body of research on the benefits of liberal arts and business education models as a means of addressing global goals and provides a valuable case study to understand better the necessity of integrative, interdisciplinary learning.

Diversity in high-impact psychiatric publishing: gender parity within reach?

Gender parity and authorship diversity are declared goals in the publishing world. This study assessed the progress of authorship gender distribution over a quarter of a century and geographic diversity over the last 15 years in high-impact psychiatric journals. All articles published in 2019 in the American Journal of Psychiatry, the British Journal of Psychiatry, and JAMA Psychiatry were included and compared with data from three points in time starting in 1994. Descriptive statistics were gathered, and chi-square tests were performed. All tests were conducted as two-tailed, and p-values < 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant. Inter-rater reliability was calculated via Cohen’s kappa. In 2019 a total of 473 articles were published. Forty percent of all authors, 42.3% of first authors, and 29.4% of senior authors were female. Counting original research articles only, female first authorship reached 50.4%. In the 25-year period between 1994 and 2019, female first (p < .001), female senior (p < .001), and female overall (p < .001) authorship has increased. In the specific period between 2014 and 2019, overall female senior authorship in all articles (p = .940) as well as first (p = .101) and senior (p = .157) in original research plateaued. In non-original research articles, female first authorship was higher in 2019 compared to 2014 (p = .014), whilst female senior authorship plateaued (p = .154). Geographic diversity was low and did not change over time. Gender parity in the subcategory original research articles was reached for the first time in 2019. Senior female authorship and geographic diversity remain areas of concern that need further investigation and specific interventions.

A Visualization Analysis of Hotspots And Frontiers of Cardiovascular Diseases With Frailty Based On CiteSpace

Cardiovascular diseases(CVD) and frailty are common health problems among the elderly. This research aims to investigate the hotspots and frontiers of the field of cardiovascular diseases with frailty. Data of publications between 2000 and 2021 was collected from the Web of Science(WoS) and CiteSpace was used for analysing the hotspots and frontiers of cardiovascular diseases with frailty research from high-impact countries, institutions, authors, cited-references, cited-journals, high-frequency keywords and burst keywords. The results showed that the United States, England and Canada were the leading countries in research of cardiovascular diseases with frailty. Other countries and regions lagged behind these developed countries. There is a need to establish cooperation between developed countries and developing countries. Research hotspots focused on frailty in the elderly with CVD, exercise intervention, assessment for CVD patients with frailty, quality of life and common diseases related to CVD with frailty. The frontier fields include care and intervention of CVD patients with frailty, social frailty and validation of CVD with frailty.

Worry from contracting COVID-19 infection and its stigma among Egyptian health care providers

Backgrounds Healthcare providers (HCPs) in COVID-19 epidemic face stressful workload of disease management, shortage of protective equipment and high risk of infection and mortality. These stressors affect greatly their mental health. The aim is to identify working conditions among Egyptian HCPs during COVID-19 epidemic as well as stigma and worry perceptions from contracting COVID-19 infection and their predictors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 565 HCPs. Data was collected through Google online self-administered questionnaire comprised seven parts: demographics characteristics, knowledge and attitude of COVID-19, working condition, worry of contracting COVID-19 at work, discrimination intention at work for COVID-19 patients, stigma assessment using impact stigma, and internalized shame scales. Results The vast majority of HCPs (94.7%) were worried from contracting COVID-19 at work. Risk factors for perceiving severe worry from contracting COVID-19 were expecting infection as a severe illness, believing that infection will not be successfully controlled, improbability to continue working during the pandemic even if in a well/fit health, high discrimination intention and impact stigma scales. Significantly high impact stigma scores were detected among those aged < 30 years, females, workers primarily in sites susceptible for contracting COVID-19 infection, those had severe worry from contracting infection at work, and high internalized shame scale. The risk factors for perceiving higher internalized shame scores were not having a previous experience in working during a pandemic, high discrimination intention towards COVID-19 patients and high impact stigma scale. Conclusions Considerable levels of worry and stigma were detected among Egyptian HCPs during COVID-19 outbreak. The psychological aspect of health care providers should not be overlooked during epidemic; appropriate institutional mental health support should be provided especially for young HCPs, those without previous work experience in epidemic and those who work in high-risk units. Raising the community awareness about contribution of HCPs in fighting the epidemic might decrease stigmatization action toward HCPs.

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF MULTI-RECYCLING ON THE FRACTURE BEHAVIOR OF POST CONSUMER HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE FROM DISPOSABLE CUPS EVALUATED BY THE J-INTEGRAL APPROACH.

The aim of the present paper is to study the effect of multi-recycling on the fracture behavior of high impact polystyrene from disposable cups. After collecting and washing the material, it was subjected to six cycles of recycling. After each cycle, it was subjected to tensile tests to determine the R-curves. The theory of the J-integral contour has been used for the development of a characterization method of the fracture strength appropriate to the case of this non-linear elastoplastic polymer material. To this end, the method of multiple specimens (Single edge notch tension SENT) of thin thickness was used, by introducing cracks of the same lengths to several identical test pieces. The results suggested a slight decrease in crack resistance of recycled high impact polystyrene, especially during the first cycle, demonstrated by a comparison of JIC values related to initiation of crack propagation. The fracture energy absorbed as a function of the cycles suggested a weakening within the material. ABSTRAK: Tujuan kajian ini adalah bagi mengkaji kesan tindak balas pada pelbagai peringkat-kitar semula ke atas kerapuhan polisterin berimpak tinggi pada cawan pakai buang. Selepas mengumpul dan membasuh cawan ini, terdapat enam peringkat kitar semula. Pada setiap peringkat, ianya akan melalui ujian tegangan bagi mendapatkan lengkung-R. Teori kamiran-J kontur telah digunakan bagi mencipta kaedah khas bagi mengkaji kekuatan retakan bersesuaian bagi kes bahan polimer elastoplastik yang tidak-linear. Sehingga kini, kaedah Regangan Tepi Takuk Tunggal (SENT) telah digunakan pada spesimen berketebalan rendah, dengan menghasilkan keretakan sama panjang di permulaan kajian di buat pada pelbagai bahan uji yang serupa. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan rintangan pada retakan telah berkurang sedikit pada polisterin kitar semula berimpak tinggi, terutama pada kitaran pertama, yang ditunjukkan pada nilai JIC pada permukaan rambatan retakan awal. Tenaga kerapuhan yang meresap pada setiap kitaran menunjukkan bahan telah melemah dari dalam.

The Impact of E-marketing on Consumer Purchase Decision in Jordan

This study explored the effect of e-marketing on consumer purchase decision in Jordan. The population includes all the accessories E-marketing companies that are located in Jordan. The sample consist of (100) individuals who work as mangers. The researcher used a questionnaire that sheds a light on e-marketing. The targeted variables are: (website, social media). It was found that the severity of the impact of E-marketing on consumer purchase decision in Jordan is high. It was found that website and social media have a high impact on consumer purchase decision in Jordan. It was found that there is a significant difference between the managers’ attitudes which can be attributed to the company age regarding for the favor of the companies which has been established since more than 10 years. The researcher recommends assisting local companies in developing their electronic marketing methods. That shall foster the development of commercial companies, especially small and medium companies.

This article illustrates the Ten Salient Practices of Undergraduate Research Mentors with examples for English studies. The authors include both one-to-one and research-team examples, recognizing that although much English scholarship is solitary, peers and near peers play key roles in high-quality, mentored undergraduate research experiences.
