To investigate the potential usefulness of Faschingbauer's (1974) abbreviated MMPI with parents of emotionally disturbed children referred for residential treatment 180 MMPI profiles were scored for this short form and scores compared with norms from the standard MMPI. While correlations were significant, many mean scores on the Faschingbauer were significantly different from those on the full MMPI. Modest correspondence between the two formats on indexes of psychopathology, profile peaks, and validity criteria was found. Use of this form is not justified with the present population.

The idea that children whose parents are unable or unwilling to care for them within the familial home should be cared for by the state or voluntary organisation, in small groups by adults who share their lives with the children, has gained considerable currency in the last two decades. (Ainsworth and Fulcher, 1981). However, although now widely accepted in principle, a uniform implementation of group care for children has been slow due to a number of factors.

Strategically planned activity components for residential treatment program directly reduced the amount of negative acting out which must be managed in the cottage environment. Sequentially guided creative tasks can provide a supportive central core for treatment goal implementation. Organized activities serve to measure progress towards individual and peer relationship objectives. Specific step-by-step strategies and projects are recommended for use within the therapeutic milieu for emotionally disturbed children and adolescents.

A study was conducted to delineate and describe a number of childhood (occurring prior to age nine) variables that could be used to predict the occurrence of maladaptive aggressive behavior in adolescence. The subjects were three groups of adolescents, all of whom participated in a residential treatment program for emotionally disturbed children. One group was characterized as aggressive and violent, and was compared with two other groups with regard to four predictive indicators: organic problems, family problems, conduct disordered behaviors, and academic achievement problems. Data were gathered from childhood treatment records. Significant differences were found between the aggressive group and the comparison groups for all four predictors. Implications for early identification and treatment are discussed.
