In this paper, an integrated system for computer aided engineering of cold forging, based on the development of a knowledge-based process planning system, is proposed. The system is integrated into a structure of computer software which combines the experience-based design guidelines and the science-based analysis and simulation. By using the proposed system, the manufacturing engineer can obtain an engineering solution between cold forged part design and part manufacture. The implemented system consists of cold forging process planning, plasticity analysis of the forging process, die design and die manufacture, and production simulation. Several industrial examples were given to demonstrate the concept of a proposed intelligent system.

Remanufacturing is a practice of growing importance due to its increasing environmental and economic benefits. Process planning plays a critical role in realizing a successful remanufacturing strategy. This paper presents a case-based reasoning method for remanufacturing process planning, which allows a process planner to rapidly retrieve, reuse, revise, and retain the solutions to past process problems. In the proposed method, influence factors including essential characteristics, failure characteristics, and remanufacturing processing characteristics are identified, and the local similarity of influence factors between the new case and the past cases is determined by nearest neighbor matching method, and then the vector of correction factor for local similarity is utilized in the nearest neighbor algorithm to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of case searching. To assess the usefulness and practicality of the proposed method, an illustrative example is given and the results are discussed.

CBR (Case-based reasoning) technique is increasingly applied in the process planning and dies intelligent design for stamping parts. In these applications, stamping parts information acts as the problem domain of cases model, while stamping process and die information as the answer domain. The similarity computation and retrieval of stamping parts are essential to the case-based design of stamping process planning and dies. In this paper, that issue is studied targeting automotive panel as the research object, and a retrieval method for similar panel parts based on the automobile panel coding is proposed. The coding structure is designed considering the automobile panel's features, especially the geometry shape features and their relationship. And the corresponding similarity calculation method is put forward. Finally, a case study is used to reveal the effectiveness of this methodology.
