Agronomic evaluation of Herbaspirillum seropedicae strain ZAE94 as an inoculant to improve maize yield in Brazil

ABSTRACT Bacteria from the genera Azospirillum and Herbaspirillum have been associated with increments in maize yield. The aim of this study was to evaluate the maize yield and nutritional content in response to inoculation with A. brasilense and H. seropediceae in association with nitrogen (N) fertilization. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a 4 x 5 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of seed inoculation (control without N and inoculation, A. brasilense strain - AbV5, H. seropediceae strain - SMR1 and co-inoculation AbV5 + SMR1) and N doses (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg ha-1). The following variables were evaluated: ear insertion height, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows per ear, number of grains per row, ear weight, yield and NPK contents in leaves and grains. There was no interaction between the factors studied. Co-inoculation with the strains promoted increments of 12% in leaf P content, compared with control, and N fertilization promoted increase in yield and leaf P content up to the maximum dose studied.

ABSTRACT The current need for increase crop yields requires the supplying of nutrients, mainly nitrogen, which increases the production cost, requiring the search for alternative products, such as seed inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria and green manures. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of green manure, seed inoculation with Herbaspirillum seropedicae, and nitrogen fertilization on the productive performance of maize crops. The experiment was conducted at the district of Estiva, in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, BA, Brazil (14º 52’ 6’’ S, 40º 44’ 55’’ W, and altitude of 917 m), from December 2015 to August 2016. A randomized block design with four repetitions was used, in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, consisting of presence or absence of green manure (velvet bean), seed inoculation with Herbaspirillum seropedicae (strain ZAE94), and mineral nitrogen fertilization (120 kg ha-1). The maize ear length and diameter, number grains per row, ear weight without husks, cob weight, and grain yield were evaluated. A significant triple interaction was found for all evaluated variables. The use of green manure presented better results than the control. Velvet bean can be used as a green manure, as an alternative to soil mineral fertilization without yield losses.

Chemical control is the main method used to combat fall armyworm in maize crops. However, its indiscriminate use usually leads to a more complex scenario characterized by loss of its effectiveness due to the development of resistance of the insect pest, emergence of secondary pests, and reduction of the populations of natural enemies. For this reason, efforts to develop strategies for agroecological pest management such as Push–Pull are increasingly growing. In this context, the present study was carried out to evaluate field effectiveness of Push–Pull systems for S. frugiperda management in maize crops in Morelos, Mexico. In a randomized block experiment, the incidence and severity of S. frugiperda, the development and yield of maize were evaluated in nine Push–Pull systems and a maize monoculture. The Push–Pull systems presented incidence/severity values lower than those of the monoculture. Morphological development and maize yield in the latter were lower than those of most Push–Pull systems. Mombasa—D. ambrosioides, Mulato II—T. erecta, Mulato II—C. juncea, Tanzania—T. erecta and Tanzania—D. ambrosioides systems presented higher yields than those of monocultures.
