Suppose $X$ is a smooth complex algebraic variety. A necessary condition for a complex topological vector bundle on $X$ (viewed as a complex manifold) to be algebraic is that all Chern classes must be algebraic cohomology classes, that is, lie in the image of the cycle class map. We analyze the question of whether algebraicity of Chern classes is sufficient to guarantee algebraizability of complex topological vector bundles. For affine varieties of dimension ${\leqslant}3$, it is known that algebraicity of Chern classes of a vector bundle guarantees algebraizability of the vector bundle. In contrast, we show in dimension ${\geqslant}4$ that algebraicity of Chern classes is insufficient to guarantee algebraizability of vector bundles. To do this, we construct a new obstruction to algebraizability using Steenrod operations on Chow groups. By means of an explicit example, we observe that our obstruction is nontrivial in general.

Abstract Let 𝑋 be a holomorphically convex complex manifold and Exc(𝑋) ⊆ 𝑋 the union of all positive dimensional compact analytic subsets of 𝑋. We assume that Exc(𝑋) ≠ 𝑋 and 𝑋 is not a Stein manifold. Here we prove the existence of a holomorphic vector bundle 𝐸 on 𝑋 such that is not holomorphically trivial for every open neighborhood 𝑈 of Exc(𝑋) and every integer 𝑚 ≥ 0. Furthermore, we study the existence of holomorphic vector bundles on such a neighborhood 𝑈, which are not extendable across a 2-concave point of ∂(𝑈).

AbstractWe investigate the pairs (X, ε) consisting of a smooth complex projective variety X of dimension n and an ample vector bundle ε of rank n − 1 on X such that ε has a section whose zero locus is a smooth elliptic curve.

Let X be an algebraic complex projective surface equipped with the euclidean topology and E a rank 2 topological vector bundle on X. It is a classical theorem of Wu ([Wu]) that E is uniquely determined by its topological Chern classes . Viceversa, again a classical theorem of Wu ([Wu]) states that every pair (a, b) ∈ (H (X, Z), Z) arises as topological Chern classes of a rank 2 topological vector bundle. For these results the existence of an algebraic structure on X was not important; for instance it would have been sufficient to have on X a holomorphic structure. In [Sch] it was proved that for algebraic X any such topological vector bundle on X has a holomorphic structure (or, equivalently by GAGA an algebraic structure) if its determinant line bundle has a holomorphic structure. It came as a surprise when Elencwajg and Forster ([EF]) showed that sometimes this was not true if we do not assume that X has an algebraic structure but only a holomorphic one (even for some two dimensional tori (see also [BL], [BF], or [T])).

AbstractUsing a modification of Webster's proof of the Newlander–Nirenberg theorem, it is shown that, for a weakly convergent sequence of integrable unitary connections on a complex vector bundle over a complex manifold, there is a subsequence of local holomorphic frames that converges strongly in an appropriate Holder class.

Let E* be a parabolic vector bundle over a smooth complex projective curve. We prove that E* admits an algebraic connection if and only if the parabolic degree of every parabolic vector bundle which is a direct summand of E* is zero. In particular, all parabolic semistable vector bundles of parabolic degree zero admit an algebraic connection.

In [5, 6, 7] I introduced the concept of Einstein-Hermitian vector bundle. Let E be a holomorphic vector bundle of rank r over a complex manifold M. An Hermitian structure h in E can be expressed, in terms of a local holomorphic frame field s1, …, sr of E, by a positive-definite Hermitian matrix function (hij) defined by

In the previous paper [1], we showed that the set of simple vector bundles of rank 2 on a rational surface with fixed Chern classes is bounded and we gave a sufficient condition for an H-stable vector bundle of rank 2 on a rational surface to be ample. In this paper, we shall extend the results of [1] to the case of higher rank.

On a complete non-singular curve defined over the complex number field C, a stable vector bundle is ample if and only if its degree is positive [3]. On a surface, the notion of the H-stability was introduced by F. Takemoto [8] (see § 1). We have a simple numerical sufficient condition for an H-stable vector bundle on a surface S defined over C to be ample; let E be an H-stable vector bundle of rank 2 on S with Δ(E) = c1(E)2 - 4c2(E) ≧ 0, then E is ample if and only if c1(E) > 0 and c2(E) > 0, provided S is an abelian surface, a ruled surface or a hyper-elliptic surface [9]. But the assumption above concerning Δ(E) evidently seems too strong. In this paper, we restrict ourselves to the projective plane P2 and a rational ruled surface Σn defined over an algebraically closed field k of arbitrary characteristic. We shall prove a finer assertion than that of [9] for an H-stable vector bundle of rank 2 to be ample (Theorem 1 and Theorem 3). Examples show that our result is best possible though it is not a necessary condition (see Remark (1) §2).

Abstract We extend the concept of the Segre invariant to vector bundles on a surface X. For X = ℙ2 we determine what numbers can appear as the Segre invariant of a rank 2 vector bundle with given Chern classes. The irreducibility of strata with fixed Segre invariant is proved and their dimensions are computed. Finally, we present applications to the Brill–Noether Theory for rank 2 vector bundles on ℙ2.

Let ɛ be an ample vector bundle of rank r≥2 on a compact complex manifold X of dimension n≥r+1 having a section whose zero locus is a submanifold Z of the expected dimension n–r. Pairs (X, ɛ) as above are classified under the assumption that Z is either a projective space or a quadric.
