Abstract. We investigate ionospheric flow patterns from 28th January 2002 associated with the development of the nightside distorted end of a “J”-shaped Transpolar Arc (nightside distorted TPA). Based on the nightside ionospheric flows near to the TPA, detected by the SuperDARN radars, we discuss how the distortion of the nightside end toward the pre-midnight sector is produced. The “J”-shaped TPA was seen under southward Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) conditions, in the presence of a dominant dawnward IMF-By component. At the onset time of the nightside distorted TPA, particular equatorward plasma flows at the TPA growth point were observed in the post-midnight sector, flowing out of the polar cap and then turning toward the pre-midnight sector of the main auroral oval along the distorted nightside part of the TPA. We suggest that these plasma flows play a key role in causing the nightside distortion of the TPA. SuperDARN also found ionospheric flows typically associated with “Tail Reconnection during IMF Northward Non-substorm Intervals” (TRINNIs) on the nightside main auroral oval before and during the TPA interval, indicating that nightside magnetic reconnection is an integral process to the formation of the nightside distorted TPA. During the TPA growth, SuperDARN also detected anti-sunward flows across the open-closed field line boundary on the dayside that indicate the occurrence of low-latitude dayside reconnection and ongoing Dungey cycle driving. This suggests that nightside distorted TPA can grow even in Dungey-cycle-driven plasma flow patterns.

AIM: The study aims to compare the results of objective parameters such as autorefractometers of the open field Grand Seiko and closed field TONOREF III. and the subjective parameters such as the positive of relative accommodation (PRA) and the amplitude of accommodation (AA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 children (60 eyes) with low and moderate myopia (on average -2.96 0.17 D) aged from 8 to 12 years (on average 10.04 0.24 years) were examined. Subjective (PRA, AA) and objective parameters of binocular adaptation (BAO) and monocular adaptation (MAO) response on the Grand Seiko Binocular Open Field Autorefkeratometer WR - 5500K (Japan) and the AA on the automatic refractokeratotonometer pakhimetre TONOREF III (Nidek, Japan) were determined. RESULTS: The average of BAO and MAO at 33 cm was -1.93 0.04 D and 1.86 0.05 D, respectively. The average PRA was 1.5 0.16 D. The objectively measured average AA was 5.25 0.4 D. The average minimum AA value was -2.86 0.16 D, and the average maximum value was 8.11 0.46 D. The subjective AA on the Iksar device was on average 4.17 0.43 D; Amin, on average -3.77 0.26 D; Amax, on average was -7.94 0.59 D. CONCLUSION: The objective and subjective measurements of AA produced comparable results. BAO and MAO reflected other characteristics of accommodation, different from its amplitude, and characterized the adequacy of the accommodation response to a specific accommodation task. The advantage of objective accommodation is that it is independent of the patients responses and intellectual level.

Abstract We show that a rational function f of degree $>1$ on the projective line over an algebraically closed field that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and non-archimedean absolute value has no potentially good reductions if and only if the Berkovich Julia set of f is uniformly perfect. As an application, a uniform regularity of the boundary of each Berkovich Fatou component of f is also established.

Abstract The objective of this research is to study the influence of deposition parameters such as gases mixing ratio O2/Ar on the structural and optical properties of the TiO2/SiO2 nanocomposite films synthesized using closed field unbalanced dc magnetron co-sputtering technique. The nanocomposite thin films were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine the phase structure, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to investigate Si-O-Si, Ti-O and Si–O–Ti. functional groups. The UV-VIS. absorption spectra of the synthesized films reveal that the indirect energy band gap was found to be 2.75 eV. The mixing ratio of Oxygen and Argon (O2/Ar) gases has a pronounced controlling effect on the structural and optical properties of such nanocomposite.

Abstract Let 𝑘 be a non-perfect separably closed field. Let 𝐺 be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over 𝑘. We study rationality problems for Serre’s notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of 𝐺. In particular, we present the first example of a connected non-abelian 𝑘-subgroup 𝐻 of 𝐺 that is 𝐺-completely reducible but not 𝐺-completely reducible over 𝑘, and the first example of a connected non-abelian 𝑘-subgroup H ′ H^{\prime} of 𝐺 that is 𝐺-completely reducible over 𝑘 but not 𝐺-completely reducible. This is new: all previously known such examples are for finite (or non-connected) 𝐻 and H ′ H^{\prime} only.

We determine all configurations of rational double points that occur on RDP del Pezzo surfaces of arbitrary degree and Picard rank over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic ${\rm char}(k)=p \geq 0$, generalizing classical work of Du Val to positive characteristic. Moreover, we give simplified equations for all RDP del Pezzo surfaces of degree $1$ containing non-taut rational double points.

Abstract Let $X$ be a quasi-projective algebraic variety over a real closed field $R$, and let $f \colon U \to R$ be a function defined on an open subset $U$ of the set $X(R)$ of $R$-rational points of $X$. Assume that either the function $f$ is locally semialgebraic or the field $R$ is uncountable. If for every irreducible algebraic curve $C \subset X$ the restriction $f|_{U \cap C}$ is continuous and admits a rational representation, then $f$ is continuous and admits a rational representation. There are also suitable versions of this theorem with algebraic curves replaced by algebraic arcs. Heretofore, results of such a type have been known only for $R={\mathbb{R}}$. The transition from ${\mathbb{R}}$ to $R$ is not automatic at all and requires new methods.

<p>In this thesis we focus on identically self-dual matroids and their minors. We show that every sparse paving matroid is a minor of an identically self-dual sparse paving matroid. The same result is true if the property sparse paving is replaced with the property of representability and more specifically, F-representable where F is a field of characteristic 2, an algebraically closed field, or equal to GF(p) for a prime p = 3 (mod 4).  We extend a result of Lindstrom [11] saying that no identically self-dual matroid is regular and simple. We assert that this also applies to all matroids which can be obtained by contracting an identically self-dual matroid.  Finally, we present a characterisation of identically self-dual frame matroids and prove that the class of self-dual matroids is not axiomatisable.</p>

Abstract Solar coronal rain is classified generally into two categories: flare-driven and quiescent coronal rain. Th latter is observed to form along both closed and open magnetic field structures. Recently, we proposed that some of the quiescent coronal rain events, detected in the transition region and chromospheric diagnostics, along loop-like paths could be explained by the formation mechanism for quiescent coronal rain facilitated by interchange magnetic reconnection between open and closed field lines. In this study, we revisited 38 coronal rain reports from the literature. From theseearlier works, we picked 15 quiescent coronal rain events out of the solar limb, mostly suggested to occur in active region closed loops due to thermal nonequilibrium, to scrutinize their formation mechanism. Employing the extreme ultraviolet images and line-of-sight magnetograms, the evolution of the quiescent coronal rain events and their magnetic fields and context coronal structures is examined. We find that six, comprising 40%, of the 15 quiescent coronal rain events could be totally or partially interpreted by the formation mechanism for quiescent coronal rain along open structures facilitated by interchange reconnection. The results suggest that the quiescent coronal rain facilitated by interchange reconnection between open and closed field lines deserves more attention.
