Abstract The paper is part of an attempt of understanding non-Kähler threefolds. We start by looking at compact complex non-Kähler threefolds with algebraic dimension two and admitting lcK metrics. Under certain assumptions, we prove that they are blown-up quasi-bundles over a projective surface.

The Wiman–Edge pencil is a pencil of genus 6 curves for which the generic member has automorphism group the alternating group [Formula: see text]. There is a unique smooth member, the Wiman sextic, with automorphism group the symmetric group [Formula: see text]. Farb and Looijenga proved that the monodromy of the Wiman–Edge pencil is commensurable with the Hilbert modular group [Formula: see text]. In this note, we give a complete description of the monodromy by congruence conditions modulo 4 and 5. The congruence condition modulo 4 is new, and this answers a question of Farb–Looijenga. We also show that the smooth resolution of the Baily–Borel compactification of the locally symmetric manifold associated with the monodromy is a projective surface of general type. Lastly, we give new information about the image of the period map for the pencil.

Let S be a rational projective surface given by means of a projective rational parametrization whose base locus satisfies a mild assumption. In this paper we present an algorithm that provides three rational maps f,g,h:A2⇢S⊂Pn such that the union of the three images covers S. As a consequence, we present a second algorithm that generates two rational maps f,g˜:A2⇢S, such that the union of its images covers the affine surface S∩An. In the affine case, the number of rational maps involved in the cover is in general optimal.

Let $\mathcal {F}$ be a polystable sheaf on a smooth minimal projective surface of Kodaira dimension 0. Then the differential graded (DG) Lie algebra $R\operatorname {Hom}(\mathcal {F},\mathcal {F})$ of derived endomorphisms of $\mathcal {F}$ is formal. The proof is based on the study of equivariant $L_{\infty }$ minimal models of DG Lie algebras equipped with a cyclic structure of degree 2 which is non-degenerate in cohomology, and does not rely (even for K3 surfaces) on previous results on the same subject.

Abstract Göttsche gave a formula for the dimension of the cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth projective surface $S$. When $S$ admits an action by a finite group $G$, we describe the action of $G$ on the Hodge structure. In the case that $S$ is a K3 surface, each element of $G$ gives a trace on $\sum _{n=0}^{\infty }\sum _{i=0}^{\infty }(-1)^{i}H^{i}(S^{[n]},\mathbb{C})q^{n}$. When $G$ acts faithfully and symplectically on $S$, the resulting generating function is of the form $q/f(q)$, where $f(q)$ is a cusp form. We relate the Hodge structure of Hilbert schemes of points to the Hodge structure of the compactified Jacobian of the tautological family of curves over an integral linear system on a K3 surface as $G$-representations. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a $G$-orbit of curves with nodal singularities not to contribute to the representation.

The Beauville–Voisin conjecture for a hyperkähler manifold $X$ states that the subring of the Chow ring $A^{\ast }(X)$ generated by divisor classes and Chern characters of the tangent bundle injects into the cohomology ring of  $X$ . We prove a weak version of this conjecture when $X$ is the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface for the subring generated by divisor classes and tautological classes. This in particular implies the weak splitting conjecture of Beauville for these geometries. In the process, we extend Lehn’s formula and the Li–Qin–Wang $W_{1+\infty }$ algebra action from cohomology to Chow groups for the Hilbert scheme of an arbitrary smooth projective surface  $S$ .

We express nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves on a smooth projective surface as ‘virtual resolutions’ of degeneracy loci of maps of vector bundles on smooth ambient spaces. We show how to modify the resulting obstruction theories to produce the virtual cycles of Vafa–Witten theory and other sheaf-counting problems. The result is an effective way of calculating invariants (VW, SW, local PT and local DT) via Thom–Porteous-like Chern class formulae.

Abstract In this paper, we define the $K$-theoretic Hall algebra for dimension $0$ coherent sheaves on a smooth projective surface, prove that the algebra is associative, and construct a homomorphism to a shuffle algebra introduced by Negut [ 10].
