We carry out a mathematical analysis of the quadrilateral fields from Codex Santa María Asunción and compare it with similar previous results from Codex Vergara, as well as analyze fields with more than four sides from both codices. We also provide a computational tool to draw all the possible shapes of the fields. Finally, we use the concept of maximum area to test the feasibility of the areas recorded in the codices and conclude that the Acolhua were very good surveyors.

Density waves in the nature of those proposed by B. Lindblad are described by detailed mathematical analysis of collective modes in a disk-like stellar system. The treatment is centered around a hypothesis of quasi-stationary spiral structure. We examine (a) the mechanism for the maintenance of this spiral pattern, and (b) its consequences on the observable features of the galaxy.

In order to better understand the distribution of cell traction forces generated by rapidly locomoting cells, we have applied a mathematical analysis to our modified silicone rubber traction assay, based on the plane stress Green’s function of linear elasticity. To achieve this, we made crosslinked silicone rubber films into which we incorporated many more latex beads than previously possible (Figs. 1 and 6), using a modified airbrush. These films could be deformed by fish keratocytes, were virtually drift-free, and showed better than a 90% elastic recovery to micromanipulation (data not shown). Video images of cells locomoting on these films were recorded. From a pair of images representing the undisturbed and stressed states of the film, we recorded the cell’s outline and the associated displacements of bead centroids using Image-1 (Fig. 1). Next, using our own software, a mesh of quadrilaterals was plotted (Fig. 2) to represent the cell outline and to superimpose on the outline a traction density distribution. The net displacement of each bead in the film was calculated from centroid data and displayed with the mesh outline (Fig. 3).

O presente artigo tem por objetivo discutir a relação entre a Academia Brasílica dos Renascidos, agremiação fundada em 1759 na Bahia, e a política ilustrada do Marquês de Pombal, mecenas desta academia, de forma que se possa compreender como esta instituição letrada contribuiu para o projeto do Marquês: a expulsão dos jesuítas do Brasil. Tal relação pode ser vislumbrada a partir de dois aspectos: a obediência aos Estatutos acadêmicos e a utilização de textos encomiásticos para a exaltação da figura de Pombal, de modo que fosse uma propaganda de seu governo ilustrado. Assim, em um primeiro momento, serão abordados os Estatutos da Academia Brasílica dos Renascidos, de forma que sejam apresentados os procedimentos para lograr a obediência dos acadêmicos, e, em um segundo momento, serão abordados aspectos da escrita acadêmica encomiástica. Para tanto, analisar-se-á um poema em louvor a Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo produzido por Frei Antônio de Santa Maria Jaboatão, dando ênfase aos aspectos que contribuem para a propagação da política pombalina.

Incidência de constipação intestinal em estudantes de nível superior do sexo feminino

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a incidência e as características da constipação intestinal em estudantes universitárias. Foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa descritiva com 104 estudantes do sexo feminino do Curso de Fisioterapia da UNIFRA, Santa Maria/RS. Os instrumentos utilizados foram o questionário de Roma III; uma ficha de avaliação e a escala de Bristol, respondidos pelas acadêmicas do curso de Fisioterapia. A incidência de constipação intestinal foi de 59,62% para os critérios de Roma III. Observou-se relevância nas questões referentes ao esforço evacuatório, sensação de esvaziamento incompleto e utilização de manobras manuais, questões específicas do questionário de Roma III. A sintomatologia mais referida foi a flatulência abdominal, com 49,04% da amostra. Se não tratada, a constipação pode desencadear patologias pélvicas como prolapsos e incontinências. Por isso, sugere-se a implantação do autocuidado para os futuros profissionais dos cursos de fisioterapia.Palavras-chave: constipação intestinal, estudantes, Fisioterapia.

The choice of cost-effective method of anticorrosive protection of steel structures is an urgent and time consuming task, considering the significant number of protection ways, differing from each other in the complex of technological, physical, chemical and economic characteristics. To reduce the complexity of solving this problem, the author proposes a computational tool that can be considered as a subsystem of computer-aided design and used at the stage of variant and detailed design of steel structures. As a criterion of the effectiveness of the anti-corrosion protection method, the cost of the protective coating during the service life is accepted. The analysis of existing methods of steel protection against corrosion is performed, the possibility of their use for the protection of the most common steel structures is established, as well as the estimated period of effective operation of the coating. The developed computational tool makes it possible to choose the best method of protection of steel structures against corrosion, taking into account the operating conditions of the protected structure and the possibility of using a protective coating.
