The paramagnetic resonance method has been applied to investigate the magnetic properties of complexes containing elements of the 4 d and 5 d groups. It is shown that the resonance results, and such information as is available from susceptibility measurements, can be accounted for to a good approximation by assuming that there are either covalent σ -bonds or very strong electrostatic bonds in the complex (Van Vleck 1935). In the case of d 5 complexes, however, accurate measurements of the spectroscopic splitting factors show small discrepancies with this theory. Furthermore, an anomalous hyperfine structure is observed for the complex [IrCl 6 ] 2- , which displays lines arising not only from the Ir nucleus, but also from the surrounding Cl nuclei. These effects are ascribed to the presence of weak π -bonds, in addition to σ -bonds, in the complex (Stevens 1953). In magnetically concentrated salts of the 5 d group, it is found that there is strong exchange interaction between paramagnetic neighbours.

Abstract Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of manganese-doped strontium titanate were investigated for several Mn concentrations. The spectra of Mn2+ and Mn4+ ions were observed and attributed, respectively, to Mn ions occupying Sr2+ and Ti4+ sites. The relative intensity of the spectra suggested that the manganese ions occupy preferentially Ti4+ sites. The results showed that the EPR peak-to-peak linewidth of the Mn4+ spectrum increases with manganese concentration according to the theoretical equation DHpp=0.45+210.f.(1-f)80 (mT). This suggested that the exchange interaction between tetravalent manganese ions in strontium titanate has an approximate range of 0.96 nm, comparable to that of Gd3+ in the same compound.

Abstract The binuclear electron paramagnetic resonance signals of α-methemocyanin of Helix pomatia were investigated at liquid helium temperatures. These signals were completely eliminated by the addition of fluoride and enhanced in the presence of chloride, which did not alter the saturation behavior. The triplet nature of the signal at g = 4.59 was confirmed by the low power-saturation. The addition of nitrite at pH 5.0 and 0° C yielded slowly and reversibly a seven-line half-field signal. On lowering the temperature the intensity of the triplet signals increased to the lowest temperature reached 4.2 K, excluding a strong exchange coupling.
