The Distinct Timing Hypothesis (DTH) proposes that two different neuronal computations underlie temporal information processing below and above one second. We tested DTH predictions by varying the interval between two visual events (S and C) from 400 to 2000 ms. To verify whether attentive encoding processes play a role, we deployed three durations for S (120, 160, and 200 ms), which map to attentive sampling frequencies of 8.33, 6.25, and 5 Hz. The one-second divide does not modulate sensory precision in duration discrimination, while it determines whether participants will dilate/compress perceived S duration. However, all distortion effects disappear when S is extended to 200 ms, suggesting that a sampling rate of 5 Hz optimizes subjective decisions. Since the effects of the one-second divide on perceived duration are not hardwired, a single computational mechanism may underlie both sub-second and supra-second temporal scales for behavior, in flexible interaction with attentive encoding processes.

We examined the influence of spatial factors in temporal processing. Participants categorised as short or long empty intervals marked by two brief flashes delivered from locations differing in height and depth (experiment 1), or from two of three locations on a vertical plane (experiment 2). The perceived duration of intervals, as determined by the point of subjective equality, was affected by the height and depth of the signals (experiment 1). Experiment 2 showed that the point of fixation plays a critical role in perceived duration. The duration of an interval located in the upper visual field is perceived as longer when participants fixate the higher visual source and shorter when the fixation point is set in the middle; this latter result also generally applies when the fixation point is in the lower source. Finally, for the sensitivity level, there was a significant segment (upper versus lower) × direction (descending versus ascending) interaction in experiment 1; a similar interaction effect varied according to the fixation point in experiment 2. In experiment 2, the Weber fractions were around 0.22. Most results can be explained in terms of the need to shift attention from one visual source—for marking time intervals—to another.

Abstract Synaesthesia is a multimodal phenomenon in which the activation of one sensory modality leads to an involuntary additional experience in another sensory modality. To date, normal multisensory processing has hardly been investigated in synaesthetes. In the present study we examine processes of audiovisual separation in synaesthesia by using a simultaneity judgement task. Subjects were asked to indicate whether an acoustic and a visual stimulus occurred simultaneously or not. Stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) as well as the temporal order of the stimuli were systematically varied. Our results demonstrate that synaesthetes are better in separating auditory and visual events than control subjects, but only when vision leads.
