AbstractDual mode imaging in the mid infrared band, a joint use of thermography and quasi-thermal reflectography, was recently proposed as a full field diagnostic tool in cultural heritage. Here we discuss for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a detailed application of such non destructive technique to the diagnostics of frescoes, with an emphasis on the location of detachments. We also investigate the use of a thermographic method based on TSR (thermal signal reconstruction), in a long pulse stimulus scheme, as well as the spatial registration of thermal images after post-processing analysis to their visible counterpart, so as to obtain a fine resolution diagnostic map. As an exemplar case study, we report about the application of dual mode imaging with a 500 $${\upmu }\hbox {m}$$ μ m pixel size at object plane on the “Monocromo”, a fresco by Leonardo da Vinci located in the Sforza Castle (Milan, Italy). Our technique was used to guide the conservators during the restoration works, opening new perspectives in artwork diagnostics.

Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century, used injection replica techniques to study internal surfaces of the cerebral ventricles. Developments in replicating media have made it possible for modern morphologists to examine injection replicas of lung and kidney with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Deeply concave surfaces and interrelationships to tubular structures are difficult to examine with the SEM. Injection replicas convert concavities to convexities and tubes to rods, overcoming these difficulties.Batson's plastic was injected into the renal artery of a horse kidney. Latex was injected into the pulmonary artery and cementex in the trachea of a cat. Following polymerization the tissues were removed by digestion in concentrated HCl. Slices of dog kidney were aldehyde fixed by immersion. Rat lung was aldehyde fixed by perfusion via the trachea at 30 cm H2O. Pieces of tissue 10 x 10 x 2 mm were critical point dried using CO2. Selected areas of replicas and tissues were coated with silver and gold and examined with the SEM.

In this paper, one spin-selected vortex metalens composed of silicon nanobricks is designed and numerically investigated at the mid-infrared band, which can produce vortex beams with different topological charges and achieve different spin lights simultaneously. Another type of spin-independent vortex metalens is also designed, which can focus the vortex beams with the same topological charge at the same position for different spin lights, respectively. Both of the two vortex metalenses can achieve high-efficiency focusing for different spin lights. In addition, the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion through the vortex metalens is also discussed in detail. Our work facilitates the establishment of high-efficiency spin-related integrated devices, which is significant for the development of vortex optics and spin optics.
