Regeneration by three species of Banksia on the south coast of Western Australia in relation to fire interval

The regeneration strategies of three Banksia species in relation to fire were studied over 20 years in a mediterranean heathland-shrubland on the south coast of Western Australia. Banksia baueri and B. nutans are both bushes 1–2 m high, while B. baxteri is a shrub 4 m high. All three species regenerated only from seed released from the canopy seed bank after fire. They did not start to flower until 6 years after fire and seed set took even longer. Differences between the species in age-related intensity of flowering were related to the rate at which each species accumulated seed in the canopy. Even plants over 40 years old were still increasing their overall canopy seed bank or replacing seeds that had been released or were no longer viable. The vegetation studied appeared to be little affected by humans historically and to have burnt only at intervals of 30–60 years or more. Consequently, although all three species needed fire to regenerate, management of fire regimes needs to allow adequate intervals between fires for the replacement of their canopy seed banks. Indeed, all three Banksia species studied were extinguished from one area burnt twice at an interval of 9 years. Models developed with Banksia species from the northern sand plains of Western Australia, where fires appear more frequent, may need modification to be applicable to all south-coastal species.

Two species of banksia, studied on the south coast of Western Australia, flowered simultaneously and had floral characteristics often associated with vertebrate pollination. The pollen of both was carried by honeyeater birds and small mammals (honey possums). Despite this, differential exclusion of vertebrates and invertebrates from inflorescences indicated that Banksia attenuata set substantial quantities of seed when visited only by invertebrates, although seed set increased with the addition of vertebrate visitors. Banksia baxteri set much seed in the absence of any animal visitors and seed set increased with invertebrate, but not vertebrate, visitation. We suggest that these differences in pollination strategies reflect regeneration by B. baxteri solely from canopy seeds released after fire, whereas B. attenuata also regenerates from seeds released between fires, as well as from lignotubers and epicormic buds.

Ten annual Trifolium and Medicago cultivars were sown at low (1-6 lb an acre) and high (3-18 lb an acre) seeding rates with wheat crops in five trials in the south-eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia. Wheat and legume seed yields from these mixed stands were compared with stands of the same rates of wheat and legume sown alone. Sowing the legumes with the crop reduced wheat yields by from 7.4 bushels an acre (25 per cent) in one trial to 1.5 bushels an acre (5 per cent) in another. The evidence did not suggest which factors caused the different response. Legume seed production under the crop was severely reduced in all trials. In 30 of the 44 comparisons made it was reduced by more than 50 per cent, and in 13 cases by more than 75 per cent. In 9 cases the amount of seed set under the crop was less than 30 lb an acre. In most cases trebling the amount of legume seed sown under the crop greatly increased legume seed yield but caused only a small (less than one bushel per acre) further decrease in wheat yield.

Objectives, methods, and results of a two-year aerial survey for sperm whales off the coast of Western Australia, 1963-65, are described. Data from commercial whaling operations have been included where appropriate. Sperm whales were found well off the west coast, but only in a narrow strip along the continental slope off the south coast. On both coasts, the main direction of movement was parallel to the coastline and towards Cape Leeuwin. Unexpectedly, whales off the west coast were heading mainly southwards throughout the year. Densities in the offshore area north of Perth were significantly higher than along the continental slope in the same region but similar to those along the continental slope from Perth to Cape Leeuwin. The situation was reversed on the south coast with whales being found, in high densities, only along the continental slope. Off the west coast, there were marked decreases in abundance in winter, with peaks in spring-early summer and autumn; no change in direction of movement could be related to the peaks. Average numbers calculated as present in the survey area at one time were: west coast, c. 1000 whales; south coast, c. 200 whales. South coast data indicate the passage of about 40 whales in one 24 hr period, very similar to results from whaling company aerial spotter data off Albany. The hypothesis of two separate populations of sperm whales off Western Australia is discussed and thought to be unlikely. A small amount of data on baleen whale sightings is recorded.
