A simple and sensitive derivative spectrophotometric method for simultaneous determination of nickel and copper using 6-(2- naphthyl)-2,3-dihydro-1,2,4-triazine-3-thione (NDTT) as a selective analytical reagent was developed. The complexes of metal ions with NDTT were formed immediately in basic media and extracted with chloroform. The zero-crossing measurement technique was found suitable for the direct measurement of the third-derivative value of Ni-NDTT and Cu-NDTT at 501 and 472 nm respectively. Beer’s law is obeyed in the concentration range 1-30 μg/mL for both cations with different ratios. The limit of detection was 0.26 μg/mL and 0.13 μg/mL for copper and nickel respectively. The within day and between day variations showed coefficient of variation (CV%) values less than 2.80 and 2.97 for copper and nickel respectively. The error of the determination method did not exceed 6.50%. Analysis of alloy sample showed that this method can be successfully used for simultaneous determination of Cu and Ni in real samples.

The spectrophotometric methods of determining Fe(III) ions with Chromazurol S, Eriochromazurol B and Eriochromcyanine R in the presence of cationic, anionic and nonionic tensides were compared using the basic optical and statistical parameters. A method was proposed and developed for the determination of Fe(III) ions using Chromazurol S in blood serum and plasma at pH 4.7-5.0 in a medium of 2 . 10-4M cetylpyridinium bromide and 0.1M pyridine buffer and at pH 6.0-6.5 in a medium of 2 . 10-3M cetylpyridinium bromide and 0.1M hexamethylenetetramine buffer with molar absorption coefficients of 1.31 . 105 and 1.40 . 105, respectively. The determination is sufficiently specific even at pathological concentrations of the other serum components.

5-Hydroxy-6-mercapto-benzo [a] phenazine (HMBP) is proposed as a sensitive and selective analytical reagent for the extractive spectrophotometric determination of copper (II). Copper reacts with HMBP to give a dark red complex which is soluble in chloroform. The composition of the CuII HMBP complex is established as 1:2 by Jobs continuous variation method and molar ratio method. The instability constant of the complex calculated by Jobs relation for nonisomolar series is 4.65 . 10-9, at room temperature. The CuII-HMBP complex in chlorophorm shows a maximum absorbance at 495 nm, with molar absorptivity and Sandells sensitivity values of 7.39 . 103dm3 mol-1 cm-1 and 0.012 mg cm-2, respectively. Beers law is obeyed in the concentration range 0.67 - 26.90 mg mL-1 and the detection limit is 0.59 mg mL-1. A repetition of the method is checked by finding the relative standard deviation (RSD) at 1.00 mg mL-1 CuII of 0.6%. The method is successfully employed for the determination of copper (II) in environmental samples. The reliability of the method is assured by analysing the standard alloys and by inter-comparison of experimental values, using an atomic absorption spectrometer.
