The interaction studies of drug ciprofloxacin with two mixed micellar systems are reported. The mixed micelles comprise a nonionic hydrophobic surfactant, pluronic L-81, an anionic surfactant, Ammonium dodecyl sulfate (ADS); and a cationic surfactant, Cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB). The various combinations chosen were L-81-ADS and L-81-CPB. The properties of both the mixed micelles were compared. Spectrophotometric, conductometric, co-solvent effect, and Infrared studies were used for the investigations. The studies were carried out in a wide range of mixed micellar concentrations in the post micellar region of the individual surfactants. The solubilization of drug CPX in the L-81-ADS was higher than that in L-81-CPB mixed micelle, as evidenced by UV studies. Ethanol and ethylene glycol were found to be effective co-solvents for both the mixed micellar systems. The conductivity studies of CPX with ADS and CPB surfactants, displayed a higher value of conductance for CPX and ADS, from 0.37µs-1 to 0.74µs-1 compared to CPX and CPB. The drug-mixed micelle displayed a higher molecular weight complex formation as seen from the IR spectra.

C-Phycocyanin (PC) and B-phycoerythrin (PE) are light-harvesting water-soluble phycobiliproteins from microalgae that belong mainly to the cyanobaceria and rhodhophytes families. Different methods have been developed for PC and PE extraction and purification from microalgae, and offer a high potential for their use as additives in sectors such as food and cosmetics. However, the main limitations of using these dyes are the sensitivity of their environmental factors, such as light fastness, temperature, and pH. We successfully employed safe lamellar nanoclays such as montmorillonite (M) and Laponite (L) for phycobiliproteins stabilization, as we did before with other natural dyes. We obtained a wide color gamut from blues to pink by combining four different factors under synthesis conditions: three dye concentrations; two laminar nanoclay sizes; a two nanoclay surface modifiers combination with cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) and a coupling agent (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane. The experimental conditions were defined according to a multilevel factorial design of experiment (DOE) to study the factors interacting in the final hybrid pigment characteristics. In both M and L, the d001 distance (nm) increased due to PC and PE adsorption. The best conditions to increase the basal space depend on the nanoclay structure, and it is better to use the surfactant for M, and silane modification for L. In addition, optical and thermal PE and PC properties significantly improved. We show the optimal synthesis conditions to increase PC and PE adsorption using the high dye concentration, with surfactant and silane depending on the nanoclay. The hybrid pigments from these phycobiliproteins offer the opportunity to perform several industrial applications, including in polymer additives, cosmetics, and packaging.

In the current paper, adsorbent based on silica gel L 40/100 modified with cetylpyridinium bromide was obtained. The presence of cetylpyridinium cations on the silica gel surface was confirmed by the diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy method. The sorption conditions of erythrosine from dilute aqueous solutions with the proposed sorbent were studied and optimized. It is shown that the use of modified silica gel allows efficient (>95%) extraction of erythrosine from aqueous solutions. Under optimal sorption conditions (pH 7, sorbent dosage 0.1 g and sorption time is 15 min), the sorption capacity of modified erythrosine sorbents was determined. It is shown that, with increasing temperature, a change in the isotherm type from the H‑type to the L‑type is observed. This change can be explained by the aggregation of erythrosin in solution, which is a competitive sorption process. It was shown that adsorption isotherms were well described by the Langmuir equation. Thermodynamic studies have made it possible to establish the spontaneous sorption. The desorption of erythrosine from the surface of silica gel modified with cetylpyridinium bromide was studied. It is shown that when using solutions of sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and distilled water, desorption does not occur. It was shown that the most effective eluent is solution of sodium dodecylsulfate in alkaline medium, and desorption of erythrosine occurs due to the destruction of ion pairs of dye anions with cetylpyridinium cations fixed on the surface. The data obtained can then be used to develop a test system for determination of erythrosine via corresponding colorimetric scales or for quantitative solid phase extraction and adsorption-spectroscopic quantification of erythrosine in some real samples.

When labeled oligonucleotides are to be used in enzymatic reactions such as primer extension, virtually all of the unincorporated label must be removed from the oligonucleotide. For this purpose, chromatographic methods or gel electrophoresis are superior to differential precipitation of the oligonucleotide with ethanol or cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB). This protocol describes a method to separate labeled oligonucleotides from unincorporated label that takes advantage of differences in mobility between oligonucleotides and mononucleotides during size-exclusion chromatography. Although size-exclusion chromatography can, in principle, be used to purify either radiolabeled or nonradiolabeled oligonucleotides, this protocol is geared toward purifying radiolabeled oligonucleotides, whose elution from the column is monitored using a minimonitor and whose separation from unincorporated nucleotides is monitored by liquid scintillation counting.

Tin(IV) oxide nanoparticles in combination with surfactants were used as a sensitive layer in a sensor for hesperidin. The effect of the surfactant’s nature and concentration on the hesperidin response was evaluated. The best parameters were registered in the case of 500 µM cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) as a dispersive agent. The SEM and electrochemical data confirmed the increase in sensor surface effective area and electron transfer rate. The sensor gave a linear response to hesperidin in the ranges of 0.10–10 and 10–75 µM with a detection limit of 77 nM. The approach was successfully tested on orange juices and validated using ultra-HPLC.

The physical and mechanical properties of nitrile–butadiene rubber (NBR) composites with N-cetylpyridinium bromide-carbon black (CPB-CB) were investigated. Addition of 5 parts per hundred rubber (phr) of CPB-CB into NBR improved the tensile strength by 124%, vulcanization rate by 41%, shore hardness by 15%, and decreased the volumetric wear by 7% compared to those of the base rubber-CB composite.
