A Treatability Index is developed to allow comparison of different reservoir waters according to their effects on a water treatments works. For the water treatment works which employs rapid gravity filters, the index is the product of the algal concentration, the clarification coefficients of algae and the filtration rate. The index is applied to reservoir waters within Thames Water area. Algae observed in reservoirs are grouped according to their shapes. Among these groups, twenty frequently observed species were selected and their clarification coefficients were measured. The treatability index was then evaluated for different waters and at different times of the year. The results were correlated to the filter run lengths and the development of headloss across the filters.

In practice, sometimes the process data did not come from a known population distribution. So the commonly used Shewhart variables control charts are not suitable since their performance could not be properly evaluated. In this paper, we propose a new EWMA Control Chart based on a simple statistic to monitor the small mean shifts in the process with non-normal or unknown distributions. The sampling properties of the new monitoring statistic are explored and the average run lengths of the proposed chart are examined. Furthermore, an Arcsine EWMA Chart is proposed since the average run lengths of the Arcsine EWMA Chart are more reasonable than those of the new EWMA Chart. The Arcsine EWMA Chart is recommended if we are concerned with the proper values of the average run length.

Kinesin force generation involves ATP-induced docking of the neck linker (NL) along the motor core. However, the roles of the proposed steps of NL docking, cover-neck bundle (CNB) and asparagine latch (N-latch) formation, during force generation are unclear. Furthermore, the necessity of NL docking for transport of membrane-bound cargo in cells has not been tested. We generated kinesin-1 motors impaired in CNB and/or N-latch formation based on molecular dynamics simulations. The mutant motors displayed reduced force output and inability to stall in optical trap assays but exhibited increased speeds, run lengths, and landing rates under unloaded conditions. NL docking thus enhances force production but at a cost to speed and processivity. In cells, teams of mutant motors were hindered in their ability to drive transport of Golgi elements (high-load cargo) but not peroxisomes (low-load cargo). These results demonstrate that the NL serves as a mechanical element for kinesin-1 transport under physiological conditions.

Abstract We consider a stochastic variant of the single machine total weighted tardiness problem jobs parameters are independent random variables with normal or Erlang distributions. Since even deterministic problem is NP-hard, it is difficult to find global optimum for large instances in the reasonable run time. Therefore, we propose tabu search metaheuristics in this work. Computational experiments show that solutions obtained by the stochastic version of metaheuristics are more stable (i.e. resistant to data disturbance) than solutions generated by classic, deterministic version of the algorithm.
