The considerable variability of architecture and function realization of smart substation, which differ from traditional substations, makes the range of protection function check no longer restricted to one device, so it is necessary to carry out thorough monitoring and testing for various inks of functional implementation [1-2]. For this purpose, the automatic checking of protection functions for smart substation is researched, and a scheme for the implementation of the automatic checking is designed [3-4]. By means of adding various checking manners to application software implementation of the devices of protection system for smart substation, the checking and detection of various function implementation links of the protection system are performed, and by use of the expert system based on Dempster-Shafer theory a real-time virtual checking scheme is configured and through real-time analysis on checking information the conclusion of the checking is obtained. The proposed scheme enhances the self-diagnosis and self-monitoring ability of protection system for smart substation and gives full play to the superiority in digital information acquisition and information interaction of digital substation, so it can be used to the checking during on-site commissioning, besides, partial functions can be also used to perform on-line monitoring of protections being operated [5-9].

An improved system structure and a corresponding protection system are proposed in this paper, which aims at providing future DC microgrids with suitable protection ideas. At first, the ring-bus system is adjusted to balance the system control and protection and make the system more conventional for the equipment expansion. In addition, based on this structure, a protection system is established. It consists of two parts, which are local protection and pilot centralized protection. The local protection is designed for protecting the vulnerable power electronic components in converters and the pilot protection is mainly proposed for the fault isolation. The combination between two parts makes the whole system overcome the contradiction between protection speed and reliability and the method also takes the protection suitability into consideration. Finally, all the methods are verified by the simulation system based on the PSCAD /EMTDC.

To effectively guarantee a secure and stable operation of a smart substation, it is essential to develop a relay protection system considering the real-time online operation state evaluation and the risk assessment of that substation. In this paper, based on action data, defect data, and network message information of the system protection device (PD), a Markov model-based operation state evaluation method is firstly proposed for each device in the relay protection system (RPS). Then, the risk assessment of RPS in the smart substation is carried out by utilizing the risk transfer network. Finally, to highly verify the usefulness and the effectiveness of the proposed method, a case study of a typical 220 kV substation is provided. It follows from the case study that the developed method can achieve a better improvement for the maintenance plan of the smart substation.
