Strain BZ92rT was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Cells were Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and cold-adapted (growth at 1–25 °C). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (25.6 %), iso-C17 : 1 ω9c (24.9 %), iso-C11 : 0 (18.4 %) and iso-C11 : 0 3-OH (16.2 %). The predominant ubiquinone was ubiquinone-8. The genomic DNA G+C content was 72.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain BZ92rT was a member of the genus Luteimonas (94.5–95.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain BZ92rT was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Luteimonas. The name Luteimonas terricola sp. nov. is proposed, with BZ92rT (=DSM 22344T =CGMCC 1.8985T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, non-sporulating, non-flagellated rod, designated BR-9T, was isolated from soil collected on the Korean peninsula. Strain BR-9T grew optimally at pH 6.0–7.0, at 30 °C and in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BR-9T belonged to the genus Pedobacter and clustered with Pedobacter insulae DS-139T and Pedobacter koreensis WPCB189T. Strain BR-9T exhibited 98.2 and 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis WPCB189T, respectively, and <96.7 % sequence similarity with the type strains of other species in the genus Pedobacter. Strain BR-9T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain BR-9T was 38.5 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain BR-9T and P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis KCTC 12536T was 3.4–4.2 %, which indicated that the isolate was genetically distinct from these type strains. Strain BR-9T was also distinguishable by differences in phenotypic properties. On the basis of the data presented, strain BR-9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter boryungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BR-9T ( = KCTC 23344T  = CCUG 60024T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated HMD1043T, was isolated from a mesotrophic artificial lake in Korea. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (28.3 %), iso-C15 : 0 (22.9 %), summed feature 9 (comprising iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16 : 0; 8.8 %) and iso-C13 : 0 (5.3 %). The DNA G+C content was 31.3 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HMD1043T formed a lineage within the genus Chryseobacterium and was most closely related to Chryseobacterium antarcticum AT1013T (96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Chryseobacterium jeonii AT1047T (96.4 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HMD1043T is described as belonging to a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium, for which the name Chryseobacterium yonginense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HMD1043T ( = KCTC 22744T  = CECT 7547T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, DS-18T, was isolated from soil in Dokdo, Korea, and its exact taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DS-18T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C without NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-18T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas. Strain DS-18T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 68.7 mol%. Strain DS-18T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.3–98.7 % to the type strains of Brevundimonas species and Mycoplana bullata. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain DS-18T and the type strains of phylogenetically related Brevundimonas species and M. bullata were in the range 15–32 %. Strain DS-18T differed from Brevundimonas species and M. bullata in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain DS-18T represents a novel species of the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas lenta sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-18T (=KCTC 12871T =JCM 14602T).

A strictly anaerobic, mesophilic, endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain HY-35-12T, was isolated from a soil sample in Jeju, Korea. Cells of this isolate were Gram-positive, motile rods that formed oval to spherical terminal spores. Strain HY-35-12T grew optimally at 30 °C, pH 7·0 and 0–0·5 % (w/v) NaCl. The isolate produced pyruvate, lactate, acetate, formate and hydrogen as fermentation end products from glucose. The G+C content of DNA of the isolate was 41 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the organism formed a monophyletic clade with Clostridium xylanovorans and Clostridium aminovalericum in cluster XIVa of the genus Clostridium. The closest phylogenetic neighbour was C. xylanovorans, with 96·65 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Several physiological and chemotaxonomic properties were identified that enable strain HY-35-12T to be distinguished from phylogenetically related clostridia. On the basis of polyphasic characteristics, it is proposed that strain HY-35-12T (=IMSNU 40003T=KCTC 5026T=DSM 15929T) represents a novel species, Clostridium jejuense sp. nov.

A yellow-pigmented, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH)-degrading bacterium, designated F2T, was isolated from an HCH dumpsite at Ummari village in Lucknow, India. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate belonged to the genus Sphingobium. Its closest neighbour was Sphingobium japonicum UT26T (99.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The DNA G+C content was 65.7 mol%. The polyamine profile showed the presence of spermidine. The respiratory pigment was ubiquinone Q-10. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 (12.5 %), C14 : 0 2-OH (8.1 %), summed feature 3 (consisting of C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 5.8 %) and summed feature 8 (consisting of C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c; 53.1 %). The major polar lipids of strain F2T were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and sphingoglycolipid. DNA–DNA relatedness and biochemical and physiological characters clearly distinguished the isolate from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. Thus, strain F2T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingobium, for which the name Sphingobium lucknowense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain F2T ( = MTCC 9456T  = CCM 7544T).

A halotolerant, round-endospore-forming, aerobic, Gram-positive bacterium, designated BH724T, was isolated from a solar saltern at Taean in Korea. Cells of this strain were rod-shaped and found to be non-motile. Strain BH724T grew at salinities of 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl with an optimum of 3 % (w/v) NaCl and at temperatures of 15–50 °C with an optimum of 40 °C. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BH724T belonged to the genus Bacillus and that Bacillus aquimaris TF-12T, Bacillus marisflavi TF-11T and Bacillus vietnamensis JCM 11124T were its closest neighbours, sharing 97.3, 97.2 and 97.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39 mol% and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7. Its major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The peptidoglycan type was A1α, linked directly through l-lysine. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic, physiological and phylogenetic properties, strain BH724T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus seohaeanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH724T (=KCTC 3913T=DSM 16464T).

A Gram-negative-staining, non-motile rod, designated GG-w14T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of Angelica polymorpha Maxim. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate belonged to the genus Mucilaginibacter and exhibited 93.9–97.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with recognized members of the genus Mucilaginibacter (closest relative Mucilaginibacter gossypii Gh-67T). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain GG-w14T and M. gossypii KCTC 22380T was <41 %. Strain GG-w14T grew at 4–35 °C, at pH 5.0–8.0 and with 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl. The isolate hydrolysed casein, CM-cellulose and starch and contained menaquinone 7 as the major menaquinone. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 39.9 %), iso-C15 : 0 (24.2 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.4 %). The DNA G+C content was 42.5 mol%. These data suggest that strain GG-w14T should be considered as a representative of a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter angelicae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GG-w14T ( = KCTC 23250T = NCAIM B 02415T).

Two novel spore-forming, Gram-positive, mesophilic, heterotrophic bacteria representing two novel species were isolated from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Spacecraft Assembly Facility (JPL-SAF) at Pasadena, CA, USA. The incidence of similar strains was examined by screening the growing collection of isolates (~400 strains) obtained from the JPL-SAF using species-specific PCR primer sets designed from the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains SAFN-016T and SAFN-007T. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences placed these novel isolates within the genus Paenibacillus. Two strains, SAFN-016T and SAFN-125, shared 98 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Paenibacillus timonensis and 97 % similarity with Paenibacillus macerans. Strain SAFN-007T showed 95.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Paenibacillus kobensis, its nearest phylogenetic neighbour. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization, physiological tests and biochemical analysis allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the isolates from currently recognized Paenibacillus species. Strain SAFN-007T and strains SAFN-016T and SAFN-125 are representatives of two separate novel species, for which the names Paenibacillus pasadenensis sp. nov. (type strain SAFN-007T=ATCC BAA-1211T=NBRC 101214T) and Paenibacillus barengoltzii sp. nov. (type strain SAFN-016T=ATCC BAA-1209T=NBRC 101215T) are proposed.

The DNA G+C content was 36.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain DS-6T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-6T and the type strains of Flavobacterium species were below 95.4 %. Strain DS-6T differed from some phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, DS-6T (=KCTC 12542T=CIP 108840T) was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium soli sp. nov. is proposed.
