Abstract This paper proposes a security-constrained single and multi-objective optimization (MOO) based realistic security constrained-reactive power market clearing (SC-RPMC) mechanism in a hybrid power system by integrating the wind energy generators (WEGs) along with traditional thermal generating stations. Pre-contingency and post-contingency reactive power price clearing plans are developed. Different objective functions considered are the reactive power cost (RPC) minimization, voltage stability enhancement index (VSEI) minimization, system loss minimization (SLM), and the amount of load served maximization (LSM). These objectives of the SC-RPMC problem are solved in a single objective as well as multi-objective manner. The choice of objective functions for the MOO model depends on the load model and the operating condition of the system. For example, the SLM is an important objective function for the constant power load model, whereas the LSM is for the voltage-dependent/variable load model. The VSEI objective should be used only in near-critical loading conditions. The SLM/LSM objective is for all other operating conditions. The reason for using multiple objectives instead of a single objective and the rationale for the choice of the appropriate objectives for a given situation is explained. In this work, the teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm is used for solving the proposed single objective-based SC-RPMC problem, and a non-dominated sorting-based TLBO technique is used for solving the multi-objective-based SC-RPMC problem. The fuzzy decision-making approach is applied for extracting the best-compromised solution. The validity and efficiency of the proposed market-clearing approach have been tested on IEEE 30 bus network.

The uncertainty of generation and load increases in the transmission network in the power market. Considering the transmission congestion risk caused by various uncertainties of the transmission network, the optimal operation strategies of the transmission network under various operational scenarios are decided, aiming for the maximum of social benefit for the evaluation of the degree of scenario congestion. Then, a screening method for major congestion scenario is proposed based on the shadow price theory. With the goal of maximizing the difference between the social benefits and the investment and maintenance costs of transmission lines under major congestion scenarios, a multi-stage transmission network planning model based on major congestion scenarios is proposed to determine the configuration of transmission lines in each planning stage. In this paper, the multi-stage transmission network planning is a mixed integer linear programming problem. The DC power flow model and the commercial optimization software CPLEX are applied to solve the problem to obtain the planning scheme. The improved six-node Garver power system and the simplified 25-node power system of Zhejiang Province, China are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed multi-stage planning model.

The deregulation of power system brings a strong impact on all aspects of power industry, and especially the risk on the maintenance of system security. The problem is addressed and researched in this paper. Meanwhile, the paper presents a new price mechanism—security price, which is able to stimulate market participants to actively maintain system security. In addition, security price can also exert its economic leverage to alleviate the congestion of power network and the shortage of short-run capacity.
