In this paper, we propose a novel method to remove haze from a single hazy input image based on the sparse representation. In our method, the sparse representation is proposed to be used as a contextual regularization tool, which can reduce the block artifacts and halos produced by only using dark channel prior without soft matting as the transmission is not always constant in a local patch. A novel way to use dictionary is proposed to smooth an image and generate the sharp dehazed result. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art dehazing methods and produces high-quality dehazed and vivid color results.

Super-resolution image reconstruction can achieve favorable feature extraction and image analysis. This study first investigated the image’s self-similarity and constructed high-resolution and low-resolution learning dictionaries; then, based on sparse representation and reconstruction algorithm in compressed sensing theory, super-resolution reconstruction (SRSR) of a single image was realized. The proposed algorithm adopted improved K-SVD algorithm for sample training and learning dictionary construction; additionally, the matching pursuit algorithm was improved for achieving single-image SRSR based on image’s self-similarity and compressed sensing. The experimental results reveal that the proposed reconstruction algorithm shows better visual effect and image quality than the degraded low-resolution image; moreover, compared with the reconstructed images using bilinear interpolation and sparse-representation-based algorithms, the reconstructed image using the proposed algorithm has a higher PSNR value and thus exhibits more favorable super-resolution image reconstruction performance.

Sparse representation is a powerful statistical technique that has been widely utilized in image restoration applications. In this paper, an improved sparse representation model regularized by a low-rank constraint is proposed for single image deblurring. The key motivation for the proposed model lies in the observation that natural images are full of self-repetitive structures and they can be represented by similar patterns. However, as input images contain noise, blur, and other visual artifacts, extracting nonlocal similarities only with patch clustering algorithms is insufficient. In this paper, we first propose an ensemble dictionary learning method to represent different similar patterns. Then, low-rank embedded regularization is directly imposed on inputs to regularize the desired solution space which favors natural and sharp structures. The proposed method can be optimized by alternatively solving nuclear norm minimization and l 1 norm minimization problems to achieve higher restoration quality. Experimental comparisons validate the superior results of the proposed method compared with other deblurring algorithms in terms of visual quality and quantitative metrics.
