Life-threatening hyperkalemia is usually the result of renal or adrenal disorders although on some occasions it is an iatrogenic mishap. An alternate etiology of hyperkalemia is an unusual dietary regimen followed by the patient which may or may not be known to his physician. The present case occurred when the parents of a newborn infant followed the advice given for treatment of colic in the popular nutrition book, Let's Have Healthy Children.1
