Considered are the issues of using electric energy storage system in the traction power supply of direct current of a single-track section. An overview of the main directions of domestic and foreign research in the field of using these systems to increase the capacity and energy efficiency of power supply systems is given. Modeling the operation of energy storage system in traction power supply is based on the calculation of load graphs within the boundaries of inter-substation zones, formed depending on the conditions for the passage of trains and traction load on the railway section. The main provisions of the method for choosing locations and determining the parameters of energy storage system in traction power supply are considered. On the example of one of the inter-substation zones of the Sverdlovsk railway, the influence of the power of the active sectioning station on the increase in the minimum voltage level at the pantograph of the electric rolling stock is shown. The graphs of the degree of charge and the corresponding frequency distributions are given, which make it possible to evaluate the operating conditions of the electric energy storage system depending on the conditions for the formation of the traction load, as well as the graphs of the load of the electric energy storage system and the corresponding charging characteristics for the operating conditions at the sectioning post. On the example of the section under consideration, the dependence of the discharge depth of the electric energy storage system on the nominal energy intensity is shown. Based on the results of calculations, an evaluation was made of the options for passing train batches in the even and odd direction in comparison with the schedule of the performed train operation. The range of variation of the nominal values of power and energy intensity of the electric energy storage system is obtained. Comparison of the accumulation system parameters for single- and double-track sections of railways, including those with a predominance of passenger traffic, is carried out.

The urban railway systems using state-of-the-art technologies for train traffic, safety, traction and rail infrastructure are becoming increasingly widespread in the world. The Moscow Central Circle railroad is an example illustrating their integration into the urban transportation system of a megacity.Development and continuous modernization of such railroad systems during their operation generate new innovative approaches, particularly in the field of electric power supply.Electric traction load on the traction electric power supply system of the Moscow Central Circle railroad has several features explained by prevalence of passenger traffic and frequent changes of operating modes of electric trains. Frequently used regenerative braking determines the statement of the problem of developing a complex of measures to increase the efficiency of traction power supply system measured by the criterion of output capacitance reduction and of energy efficiency indicators’ growth. The use of electric energy storage systems within the traction power supply system can help to solve thementioned problem.The objective of the described research is to assess the efficiency of the implementation of the electric energy storage devices within the system of traction power supply system of the Moscow Central Circle. The research uses the methods of statistical processing of the measurement data and of simulation modelling. Simulation modelling of interaction of electric rolling stock with traction power supply system within the Moscow Central Circle allows to obtain the characteristics of load chart of electric energy storage systems and of bus voltage at sectioning posts, to evaluate the durations of operation cycles in charge and discharge modes, their number and relevant total amount of electric energy per day.The obtained results allow assessing the technical features of various types of electric energy storage devices regarding operating conditions within traction power supply system of the Moscow Central Circle and to determine the economic efficiency of their implementation.

Modes of traction power supply system in case of electric vehicle equipped with energy storage are considered in the paper. It is shown that the application of energy storage for limiting the rolling stock current does not only allow utilizing electric energy more efficiently but also reduces energy loses in traction power supply system.

Increasing the efficiency of cargo transportation by rail is not only one of the main directions of the company JSC “Russian Railways” but also one of the main tasks of our country in order to achieve sustainable economic growth. Electric rolling stock is the largest consumer of electric energy in the company, that’s why its effective and failure-free operation is the way to solve the set tasks. The paper deals with studies related to the operation modes of a freight electric rolling stock of direct current for the purpose of determining the requirements for electric energy storage device, since it is the electric rolling stock that determines the daily schedule of electric load. The order of the analysis of experimental trips of freight electric locomotives of a direct current on the basis of cartridges of recorders of traffic parameters installed on the locomotive is determined. On the basis of the analysis of conducted trips, the main requirements for the energy storage device were obtained with a single running of electric DC rolling stock, namely the average duration of the operation modes of the electric locomotive, the maximum, minimum, and average values of voltage and current, the average value of the electric energy returned to the contact network, time of charge/discharge, and the useful energy intensity of the electric energy storage device. The studies were carried out with the support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research for the project No 17-20-01148 ofi_m_RZD/17.
