Texture feature extraction and description using gabor wavelet in content-based medical image retrieval

Texture feature extraction and description is one of the important research contents in content-based medical image retrieval. The chapter first proposes a framework of content-based medical image retrieval system. It then analyzes the important texture feature extraction and description methods further, such as the co-occurrence matrix, perceptual texture features, Gabor wavelet, and so forth. Moreover, the chapter analyzes the improved methods for these methods and demonstrates their application in content-based medical image retrieval.

This paper presents a method for endoscopic image retrieval based on color–texture correlogram and Generalized Tversky's Index (GTI) model. First we define a new image feature named color–texture correlogram, which is the extension of color correlogram. The texture image extracted by texture spectrum algorithm is combined with color feature vector, and then we calculate the spatial correlation of color–texture feature vector. Similarity metric is also the key technology during domain of image retrieval, GTI model is used in medical image retrieval for similarity metric, and the technique of relevance feedback is used in the algorithm to enhance the efficiency of retrieval. Experimental results show that the method discussed in this paper is much more effective.


This paper proposes a content image retrieval using the texture and the color feature of the images. Although for extraction of texture feature, the “gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) algorithm” is used and for extracting color feature the color histogram is used. The presented system is tested on the WANG database that contains a thousand color images with ten different classes by the help of three various type of distances
