Microscopic simulation of traffic flow at signalized intersection based on cellular automata

An adequate queue storage length is critical for a metered on-ramp to prevent ramp queue spillback to the upstream signalized intersection. Previous research on queue length estimation or queue storage length design at metered ramps has not taken into account the potential impact of various on-ramp traffic flow arrival profiles on ramp queue lengths. This paper depicts the traffic flow arrival profiles and queue generation processes at three different metered ramp categories. Based on a large number of microscopic simulation runs, it is found that, under a given demand-to-capacity scenario, the queue at a metered ramp with two on-ramp feeding movements is more likely to be cleared in a cycle than at a metered ramp with three on-ramp feeding movements. Also, the platoon dispersion effect significantly reduces the ramp queue length, and hence the queue storage needs at a metered ramp. In addition, this paper reveals that ramp queue length tends to increase linearly with upstream signal cycle length. The design of queue storage length for a metered on-ramp hence needs to fully consider the various ramp configurations and upstream signal timing settings.

The effect of incidents on capacity is the most critical parameter in estimating the influence of incidents on network performance. The Highway Capacity Manual 2010 (HCM 2010) provides estimates of the drop in capacity resulting from incidents as a function of the number of blocked lanes and the total number of lanes in the freeway section. However, there is limited information on the effects of incidents on the capacity of urban streets. This study investigated the effects on capacity of the interaction between the drop in capacity below demand at a midblock urban street segment location and upstream and downstream of signalized intersection operations. A model was developed to estimate the drop in capacity at the incident location as a function of the number of blocked lanes, the distance from the downstream intersection, and the green time–to–cycle length (g:C) ratio of the downstream signal. A second model was developed to estimate the reduction in the upstream intersection capacity resulting from the drop in capacity at the midblock incident location as estimated by the first model. The second model estimated the drop in capacity of the upstream links feeding the incident locations as a function of incident duration time, the volume-to-capacity (V/C) ratio at the incident location, and distance from an upstream signalized intersection. The models were developed on the basis of data generated with the use of a microscopic simulation model calibrated by comparison with parameters suggested in HCM 2010 for incident and no-incident conditions and by comparison with field measurements.

The motion characteristics of the leading vehicle and the following vehicles of the traffic flow at the typical urban intersections are qualitatively analyzed through the kinematical equation and the traffic wave theory. Then, the motion characteristic of the whole traffic flow during the dispersion process is also studied. Based on the spatiotemporal model of kinematics in the departure process and traffic wave model in the dispersion process proposed, the change of the leading vehicle of the departure process and the time of the following vehicles reaching to the stable speed as well as the relationship between the green time and the departure vehicle number at the intersection are acquired. Furthermore, according to the qualitative analysis and the quantitative calculation of the departure traffic flow at the signalized intersection, the dispersion characteristic of traffic flow at the signalized intersection was studied and analyzed, which provides reliable theoretical basis for traffic signal setting at the intersection.
