Edge computing has emerged for meeting the ever-increasing computation demands from delay-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, the computing capability of an edge device, including a computing-enabled end user and an edge server, is insufficient to support massive amounts of tasks generated from IoT applications. In this paper, we aim to propose a two-tier end-edge collaborative computation offloading policy to support as much as possible computation-intensive tasks while making the edge computing system strongly stable. We formulate the two-tier end-edge collaborative offloading problem with the objective of minimizing the task processing and offloading cost constrained to the stability of queue lengths of end users and edge servers. We perform analysis of the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty properties of the problem. Then, a cost-aware computation offloading (CACO) algorithm is proposed to find out optimal two-tier offloading decisions so as to minimize the cost while making the edge computing system stable. Our simulation results show that the proposed CACO outperforms the benchmarked algorithms, especially under various number of end users and edge servers.

Single-class closed queueing networks, consisting of infinite-server and single-server queues with exponential service times and probabilistic routing, admit product-from solutions. Such solutions, although seemingly tractable, are difficult to characterize explicitly for practically relevant problems due to the exponential combinatorial complexity of its normalization constant (partition function). In “A Probabilistic Approach to Growth Networks,” Jelenković, Kondev, Mohapatra, and Momčilović develop a novel methodology, based on a probabilistic representation of product-form solutions and large-deviations concentration inequalities, which identifies distinct operating regimes and yields explicit expressions for the marginal distributions of queue lengths. From a methodological perspective, a fundamental feature of the proposed approach is that it provides exact results for order-one probabilities, even though the analysis involves large-deviations rate functions, which characterize only vanishing probabilities on a logarithmic scale.

In this paper, we study an N server fork-join queue with nearly deterministic arrival and service times. Specifically, we present a fluid limit for the maximum queue length as [Formula: see text]. This fluid limit depends on the initial number of tasks. In order to prove these results, we develop extreme value theory and diffusion approximations for the queue lengths.

In the traffic engineering realm, queue length estimation is considered one of the most critical challenges in the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Queue lengths are important for determining traffic capacity and quality, such that the risk for blockage in any traffic lane could be minimized. The Vision-based sensors show huge potentials compared to fixed or moving sensors as they offer flexibility for data acquisition due to large-scale deployment at a huge pace. Compared to others, these sensors offer low installation/maintenance costs and also help with other traffic surveillance related tasks. In this research, a CNN-based approach for estimation of vehicle queue length in an urban traffic scenario using low-resolution traffic videos is proposed. The system calculates queue length without the knowledge of any camera parameter or onsite calibration information. The estimation in terms of the number of cars is considered a priority as compared to queue length in the number of meters since the vehicular delay is the number of waiting cars times the wait time. Therefore, this research estimates queue length based on total vehicle count. However, length in meters is also provided by approximating average vehicle size as 5 m. The CNN-based approach helps with accurate tracking of vehicles’ positions and computing queue lengths without the need for installation of any roadside or in-vehicle sensors. Using a pre-trained 80-classes YOLOv4 model, an overall accuracy of 73% and 88% was achieved for vehicle-based and pixel-based queue length estimation. After further fine-tuning of model on the low-resolution traffic images and narrowing down the output classes to vehicle class only, an average accuracy of 83% and 93%, respectively, was achieved which shows the efficiency and robustness of the proposed approach.

This paper presents the design of a fuzzy logic-based traffic scheduling algorithm aimed at reducing traffic congestion for the case of partial obstruction of a bidirectional traffic lane. Such a problem is typically encountered in rail traffic and personal rapid transportation systems with predefined and fixed traffic corridors. The proposed proportional-derivative (PD) fuzzy control algorithm, serving as a traffic control automaton, alternately assigns adaptive green light periods to traffic coming from each direction. The proposed fuzzy logic-based traffic controller has been compared with the conventional traffic control automaton featuring fixed-durations of green light intervals. The comparison has been carried out within a simulation environment for four different probability distributions of stochastic traffic flows at each end of the considered traffic corridor. Results have shown that the proposed fuzzy logic-based traffic controller performance is far superior to that of the conventional traffic control law in terms of achieving shorter vehicle queue lengths and less disparity in queue lengths for all considered simulation scenarios.

Signal control is a basic need for urban traffic control; however, it is a very rough intervention in the free flow of traffic, which often results in queues in front of signal heads. The general goal is to reduce the delays caused, and to plan efficient traffic management on the network. For this, the exact knowledge of queue lengths on links is one of crucial importance. This article presents a link-based methodology for real-time queue length estimation in urban signalized road networks. The model uses a Kalman Filter-based recursive method and estimates the length of the queue in every cycle. The input of the filter, i.e. the dynamics of queue length is described by the traffic shockwave theory and the store and forward model. The method requires one loop-detector per link placed at the appropriate position, for which the article also provides suggestions.

In modern equity markets, participants have a choice of many exchanges at which to trade, each of which typically operates as an electronic limit order book. This paper analyzes this setting as a multiclass queueing system. Taking into account the effect of investors’ order-routing decisions across exchanges, they find that the equilibrium of this decentralized market exhibits a state space collapse property, whereby the queues at different exchanges are coupled, and the overall behavior of the market is captured through a one-dimensional process that can be viewed as a weighted aggregate queue length across all exchanges. The key driver of this coupling phenomenon is anticipated delay as opposed to the queue lengths themselves.

Currently, manufacturing is characterized by increasing complexity both on the technical and organizational levels. Thus, more complex and intelligent production control methods are developed in order to remain competitive and achieve operational excellence. Operations management described early on the influence among target metrics, such as queuing times, queue length, and production speed. However, accurate predictions of queue lengths have long been overlooked as a means to better understanding manufacturing systems. In order to provide queue length forecasts, this paper introduced a methodology to identify queue lengths in retrospect based on transitional data, as well as a comparison of easy-to-deploy machine learning-based queue forecasting models. Forecasting, based on static data sets, as well as time series models can be shown to be successfully applied in an exemplary semiconductor case study. The main findings concluded that accurate queue length prediction, even with minimal available data, is feasible by applying a variety of techniques, which can enable further research and predictions.

This paper proposes a decentralized network-level traffic signal control method addressing the effects of queue spillbacks. The method is traffic-responsive, does not require data communication between intersections’ controllers, uses lane-based queue measurements, and is acyclic. Each traffic controller operating on an intersection aims at maximizing the effective outflow rate locally and independently with the goal of maximizing global throughput of the entire network. At each intersection, the signal control method estimates and adopts the maximum possible phase time in which all active movements discharge at their full capacity. This is modeled using a shock wave based queue length estimation model while capturing the spillback at the downstream links. The method demands real-time data including, the queue lengths, the arrival flows, and the downstream queue lengths in all the lanes at the control decision times. The proposed method results in a feasible solution in all conditions in the entire network with any scale within a short amount of time, which makes it favourable for real-time applications. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other well-known benchmark methods in both isolated intersection and network configurations.
