Subject Clashes over the Las Bambas copper project. Significance The government's declaration of a 30-day 'state of emergency' in six provinces in southern Peru appears not to have quelled protests at the Las Bambas mine in Apurimac that have left three dead in a conflict over alleged changes to an agreed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Any delay in bringing one of Peru's most important mining projects on stream next year would hit 2016 growth prospects. Impacts Las Bambas is expected to add 1.4% to Peru's GDP next year, with production scheduled to begin in March 2016. The mine is forecast to produce 2 million tonnes of copper concentrate in its first five years of operation. Alongside Toromocho and other new mines, it will increase Peru's economic dependence on copper.
